Lancs League Sunday

Post by Somethingfishy » Sun Aug 31, 2025 1:28 pm

House at Haslingden in what now amounts to a dead rubber.

House win the toss..batting first (obviously) and are 29/1 in the 9th over. Some overs already lost to a rain shower...with more on the way I think

Whilst the usual crap East Lancashire weather affects all games, what are your views on the ability to watch the game from the comfort of your settee ?

Without a doubt there will be many who are unable to get to certain matches but others might not bother because they can watch it on the TV.

Reduced revenue for clubs etc ?

Are all available to watch on the Telly ?

Looks like they are attempting to get some cricket on.

Perhaps not.

The bloke with the small lawnmower with a bit of foam rubber is unlikely to dry the pitch in the next few months.

Lawnmower now abandoned !

Covers coming off because it's a bit windy and Umpires setting up the stumps.

Here we go.

Not sure about where Tom Walker will be in the future but it's not likely to be as an amateur.

Perhaps needs to reduce his run up, however, he has got some pace.

His biggest addition is that now he can bat. As a middle order player he can get the runs going very quickly.

Good luck to the lad.

It's looks like it's all go at Bent End.

Their opener and umpires seem a bit confused with him being a left hander. Had no problems with the first over.

Paddy Martin doesn't allow batters to settle.

He wants the ball in his hand as soon as possible and rushes the opposition into making poor decisions.

Not that he is a bloody good bowler though !

If he has ambitions of playing at Lancs, he needs to go and play on a really fast and bouncy wicket. A Blackpool or Ormskirk type.
Although I'm sure he will get plenty if pro'ing offers.

It’s been another long season! Hopefully they manage to get a decent all rounder pro and a couple of the younger lads who’ve gained experience this year push on next season.

And with the pro on 80+ not out. So he let the amateurs take the bowling until nine down and then got out next ball.

Cricket is a game for those at all levels, whether it be a youngster learning how to be the best you you can be or a senior player trying to hold onto the best you you can be! Or even, like I always was, a player with limited skills just enjoying themselves.
To be champions of ANY league is an achievement to be proud of.

Any club that brings on young players are to be commended.

Cricket brings a huge variety of life skills.

Playing as a team, organisation, self discipline, respect for the opposition, dealing with various injuries etc etc.

That's why I played 2nd 3rd X11 in the Ribblesdale League because ******* it up with my mates and trying (mostly unsuccessfully) to mate with the local ladies down at Smacks, Savannah's etc.

Smacking a bowler over his head with a Millichanp & Hall bat which went for 96 yards was a great experience. Landed in a back garden behind Arbories Drive.

Problem they've got down there is some of the youngish players, not the really young ones who've only just made their debuts this season, have got far too much to say for themselves whilst averaging 5 with the bat!!

That club needs a real tough Aussie, Kiwi or Bok to be the pro, to kick some ass into shape. The problem is they're not cheap, and are often unavailable for. Full season anyway.

That first sentence from Dressinggown is so important.

I played cricket at school and then in the local leagues. Do any local schools play or even encourage cricket now? It's so important that cricket clubs give kids the opportunity to play cricket. Some kids rise to the top, others, like me, won't but will not even get the chance to play in such as the Works League, Sunday School League, Midweek League which are all gone now I believe.

Those of us with an interest in the game should be so thankful that there are cricket clubs who are giving opportunities to young players.

Yes agree. The young players I was referring to were the few who made their debuts. Couple of decent players in under 13 and 15’s who will hopefully stick with it as they get older.

That's why it's vital a good pro arrives next season, and I don't just mean performance on the pitch wise. This day and age young prospects soon get tempted to other clubs, and it's much easier to leave if you're losing every week.

I think the medium term future is relatively bright at RCC, there may just be a couple of wobbly seasons first before the young lads start to contribute..
