England V South Africa 1st ODI

Post by claretonthecoast1882 » Tue Sep 02, 2025 1:40 pm

Forgot all about this

South Africa won toss and decided to bowl

England 48/2 from 8 overs Duckett & Root gone.

Looking forward to seeing Sonny Baker bowl he is supposed to be fairly rapid

What is the square leg umpire doing stood there? I noticed it one game earlier in the summer too.

Classic example of poor cricket scheduling. Should be a great event playing a one day series against SA but it's shoe horned into late summer, immediately after the Hundred so no build up or anticipation at all. I had no idea it was on until I looked at the BBC Sport page about an hour ago.

Great to see that England are still playing Hundred cricket.
Oops, I forgot, they have now faced 129 balls and only lost 8 wickets -----is this really a 50 over per side game?

These England players don’t play 50 over games.

Because of the Hundred, the Royal London Cup has been turned into a journeyman and second eleven competition.

It’s little wonder we’re no good at it.

They stand there nowadays to allow the cameras to have an unobstructed view for run outs and stumpings as they just refer everything upstairs.

There's been the odd occasion where the keeper has blocked one view, and the umpire the other from the other side so they don't to take them out of the way..

... Almost like playing nonsense forms of cricket such as The Hundred before an important international series has negative consequences!

We won the ODI World Cup in 2019 ...

Can you imagine if, after England won the Rugby World Cup in 2003, the RFU had said within 2 years, " Right we want all the leading Clubs to concentrate on 7's Rugby and we're going to have a major Annual competition, with 7's tournaments every other weekend with major International stars, to attract a different type of audience. We're going to totally invent new Clubs/Franchises ( Sponsored by junk-food brands ), and then flog them off to minted foreigners to make a few bob. Meanwhile, all the Premiership Rugby Clubs should continue to fulfil their 15 aside fixtures with reserve, academy and cheap 2nd rate foreign players. " ... England then turn up at the 2007 World Cup and lose 67-0 to the All Blacks, whilst the RFU declare that the English Rugby has " never been in better shape financially " ... This is effectively what the ECB have done ..

Harry Brook when asked what style they want to play - “Go out there and bang it, get as many runs as possible and then look to take wickets”

Earlier in the week he said they don’t have meetings to discuss tactics or the opposition because he hates meetings.

Just fulfilling fixtures basically, allowing energies to be placed elsewhere. Very sad.

Showing improvement then, he went for 34 off hit first two, so only 22 off the second two.

He also had a golden duck.
Things can only get better from here for him. Line and length bowling was non-existent and you will always suffer if you don't get that right before you try any variation.
Good luck to him for the future.

Got to say I'm a little concerned regarding Brookes early captaincy. He just seems to me far too laid back, blasé and a little non plussed by it all.

England were getting a tanking and at one point in the field he was having a right giggle with another player out there. I'm not sure Morgan, or previous white ball skippers would have found getting smashed not all that amusing.

Even in his interview post match it was just " we've had a bad day" move on type of attitude without any criticism or consequences seemingly.

I personally also thought he hung Baker out to dry. South Africa were always going to try and destroy him on his debut, and only chasing 130 they literally had nothing to lose trying to smash him to all parts. He should have been on first change at best, to at least give him a bit of cover. I just hope his confidence hasn't been too badly damaged.

I went yesterday, as Headingley is always a good day out (better than OT, but that's a separate discussion). We reckoned after 3-4 overs that it 350 was about par with our batting lineup and a flat deck.
Unfortunately the 'strategy' was try and hit every ball for 6. completely brainless cricket. Even after we lost a few wickets there was no attempt to regroup and go at 4 an over for 10 overs.
After 15 overs the game was gone. A disgusting performance.

A good base in County cricket is required before tossing into the International arena - Bethell and Baker need another 12 months before selection.
