Maradonna didn't shy away from the best league in the world at his time, Italian, and therefore is the best ever Argentinian player IMO.

Yeah, but they don't have the Pukka Pies band playing The Great Escape on repeat.

The best to ever do it, and in my mind it's by some distance too. He's a better passer and more of an athlete than either Maradona or Pele and there's an argument to say Ronaldo - as immense as he is - isn't even the best Ronaldo.

A complete and utter one-off genius.

Argentinians make a lot of noise but they aren't spectacularly tuneful. They should stick to the staples 'Who are ya Who are etc' covers a multitude of singing sins.

Messi. Maradonna , Pele and Ray Deakin clearly vie for the best players ever.

I was once destined for greatness but after a scintillating spell at Rosehill Junior School an ingrowing toe nail ended my career. Lucky for Messi I always say.

I remember the 1978 World Cup in Argentina, the atmosphere at the Argentina games was out of this world. The ticker tape and fervent support was unbelievable.

It will always be subjected of debate, Pele, Maradona, Ronaldo (both of them), and I’ve been lucky enough to see 3 of them in the flesh. But for me Messi is the GOAT, a genius on the pitch and it would seem a very likeable person of it.

Gosh I remember that too. We’d just got married. I can even now hum the music that introduced the programme, many late nights sat up with those kick off times.

Messi is a once in a lifetime talent if not even less common than that! The numbers speak for themselves and very few can boast the same…….an absolute magician!

Holland were kicked off the park in the 1978 WC
A home blower ref didn't help one of the greatest ever Dutch teams get the win their talent deserved.I saw Messi in the Nou Camp car park .It was the day he signed for Barca.Maradona was a cheat and was never at Messi's level.
It's a disgrace that Holland never got the World Cup but in these days of corrupt FIFA and brown envelopes I fear they never will, despite producing some of the best players to grace a football pitch
I dont incude Burnley flop Wout in that statement.

Agreed.

I'd have Pele, van Basten and messi as my top 3. Not in that order most days.

The Dutch teams of 1974 & 1978 were amongst the best to grace any World Cup, losing consecutive finals to the Host Nation must have been awful.

You saw Messi on the day he signed for Barca? He signed for Barca in 2000 when he was thirteen-years-old. Really?

Re 1978 WC Wales v Scotland at Anfield.I worked in Sutherland at the time and borrowing a Rangers scarf hitched down the 500 + miles to join Allys Army on the Kop .The noise when Scotland scored was deafening as was the rendition of Flower of Scotland.A tremendous night. The Scots got battered in all their games but Archie Gemmils goal v Holland was one of the best of that tournament .It's alleged that the British embassy in Buenos Aires was helping Scots get home up to 18months after the final.
