What happens on bet for abandoned game?

Post by ClaretTony » Sat Sep 06, 2025 7:59 pm

A friend of mine has had a bet today on six games. Five of the six he’s got correct and the last one he backed Scunthorpe to beat Wealdstone.

Scunthorpe were winning 2-1 when the game was abandoned in stoppage time because of an injury.

My question - where does he stand on his bet?

I think normally the game is removed from your selections and the odds recalculated.

If it was abandoned in stoppage time will the result not stand?

If in stoppage time the bet should stand with the majority of bookmakers.
Some have a rule that if the game goes beyond half time the final result stands.
At worst it could be a non-runner, so still a winning bet.
If they were ever 2 goals up some companies declare it as a winning selection.

The other week I backed a team to win and also to draw.
They lead 2-0, so winner, and then the other team scored twice to make it 2-2 final score.
Winner again.

Depends what the bookies rules are, some may pay all 6 others it will be classed as a none runner or void so still get paid on 5 winners

Thanks for the info on this one. He’s still an old fashioned betting man so will be taking his winning slip to the bookies. I’ll ask him what the result was.

I suspect once the league have decided what to do, the bet will have been paid out.

The bet would normally be voided from his selection and the odds recalculated for the remaining games.

I had it a few years ago where a bet won but one of the games was abandoned due to weather, I got paid out at the recalculated odds but a week later when the abandoned game was replayed the team I had to win, Portsmouth I think, won and I got paid out the remaining winnings from the bet.

The FA rule on results used to be if 75% of the game had been completed then the results stands.

We had a similar issue in the early 2000's can't remember exactly when, but the result stood following abandonment due to a fight, with 10 minutes left.

If I had the game as a draw, I'd not be happy to lose my bet without the game being completed.

Tricky one for your mate Tony, I would ask the question at the counter before presenting his slip, some bookies will pay 5 some 6. If he accepts 5 there will be no going back if the FA rule in Scunny's favour. If they say a replay he will get the 5 account as it will not be played in their timescales. Assuming it is not thousands they will most probably pay on 6

I don't think that rule has ever existed at professional level. Perhaps at amateur level, but I wouldn't know.

A few years at a game I had bet on the game was abandoned due to a player being seriously ill When I went to collect the winnings the snake manager at Ladbrokes showed me a hugh terms and conditions poster where it stated the managers decision is final in any disputed claims
Needless to say that was the last money I donated to Ladbrokes.

I had a five fold accumulator many moons ago where the last leg was Mansfield v Preston in an evening kickoff ( I had Mansfield to win ). Preston were 1-0 up approaching half time when the game was abandoned for heavy fog. The result at the time of abandonment stood and my bet was deemed a looser by Billy Hill's

The rules may now have changed though

I've never been aware of any such rule on 75% and I can't recall a Burnley game being abandoned and the result standing.

75% seems strange. That is 67 min 30 seconds into a game. Very doubtful.
I managed for William Hill for 20 years between 74 and 94, so I can tell you categorically Ladbrokes would not have had any rule that was able to be decided on the say so of a shop manager.
That would only apply to the acceptance of a bet. The manager reserving the right not to accept a bet from a customer, as in, a landlord choosing not to serve a customer in a pub.

Something in the back of my mind recalls 75 minutes being the point that the result stands if a game was abandoned.
Not sure if that’s still a rule now (or whether it ever was !)

Unless it was one of those pool panel rules ?

Just an update - the bookies declared it a void game and paid out on the other games.

At a guess he’s lost a good amount not paying out on the 6 games.

That's the rules, wouldn't be an issue if scunthorpe were losing. He would still have been payed out on the 5 winners.

Hi CT

There seems to be some confusion as to when this game was actually called off. The match report on the Wealdstone FC official website states that the collision between the 2 players occurred in the 78th minute. The Non League paper reports that the match was called off with just over 8 minutes of normal time remaining.
It would seem that a little bit of journalistic licence is being used by some media outlets claiming that “the match was called off deep into stoppage time with Scunthorpe leading 2-1”. Hard to imagine I know.

The BBC reported the incident as being deep into stoppage time which is where I saw it.

It has now been confirmed that the fixture will not be rescheduled and the 3 points have been awarded to Scunthorpe United with no goals recorded for, or against, either side. The Wealdstone FC Board Of Directors stated that they had been in contact with the National League proposing the awarding of 3 points to Scunthorpe as the fairest outcome.

The only outcome really and I think the Wealdstone board wouldn’t have come out of it well had they said otherwise.

I’m surprised that the shoreline didn’t count though so Scunthorpe could keep the plus one on their goal difference.

In line with League Rule 8.38.

As for the shoreline at least Scunthorpe haven’t seen the 3 points get washed away on a tide of disappointment. ;)
