Summer of 1976 I was about to start Uni and spent the unbelievably hot, dry summer labouring for a builder under the incessantly burning sun, sitting outside pubs most evenings and I also had a fortnight in a tent with some mates in Newquay where it was like being on the Costa del Sol!!! I remember hearing the song "Dancing Queen" for the first time. It really was a weird time because it literally didn't rain for about 3 months, or that was how it felt and there was never any need to reduce the overs at the cricket that summer which meant that the Rawtenstall v Accy Worsley Cup final was a brilliant occasion.

I'm sure some areas had them installed, but I'm not sure they were ever ultimately required. They weren't installed where we lived, but I'm thinking I saw them in other areas on the news.

I think you might be right there, I initially thought Shilton as he was born in 1949 but he never played in the Premier League. The other was John Burridge, but he was born in 1951.

I was born in '76, and also failed to receive England recognition, but if nobody can top the 2nd division of the Hyndburn Memorial Sunday League then I'm claiming to be the greatest footballer of my year.

He was sadly very much mistaken. We went first to the tourist information where we were told bluntly to go back home on the next bus as more than a couple of "lads" without prior booking would be refused a pitch on any site in town! We were actually sitting on the pavement outside planning our next move which seemed likely to be a coach back north when a guy randomly approached us and asked if we'd found anywhere. We explained and he was really sympathetic, said we seemed decent lads, which we were tbf and told us to go to a site a few miles out of town which his brother owned and to mention his name. It was (I think?) at St Mawgan and involved a bus ride to and from Newquay each day, but tbf it was brilliant and an absolute life saver.

You and me both, a great summer to have your first real/on the road motorbike.
I learnt just recently that the scientific types refer to the 'Drought of 1975' rather than 76, as while 76 was the hot one, the drought had technically begun towards the end of the previous year.

1976 was brilliant for a 20/21 year old. Everyone seemed to have a tan and the sun seemed to shine every day. Apparently this year was hotter but it didn't feel like it.

I also remember millions of ladybirds everywhere and seeing Denis Howell (the minister for drought) doing a tv camera interview next to a stand pipe in Barrowford.

Different campsite. We were a group of five in two cars and had no problem getting admitted. I can't remember how far we were from the town, itself, but I do remember a fantastic pub called thye Spider's Web.

A lovely summer. Tomatoes grown outside, continental type
drinks in the garden, playing cards and losing money.
It was also my first probation officer residential training placement at a Hostel for men who were alcoholics
