Tonights Football

Post by claret wizard » Wed Oct 01, 2025 6:12 pm

I’m in the Al Shabab Stadium for the Gulf Club Champions League game between Al Shabab and Al Nadha (Oman). Brownhill on the bench.

What a performance from this guy-he will be a big hit at St James's if he keeps this up

Is this a “build it and they will come” type of situation?

Stadium looks lovely, if not a little soulless, but modern at least. Where are the people?

Growing up I always heard of how hearing the crowd and playing in front of thousands of people was what gave players that drive, passion and commitment to playing.

Now; it seems like it’s only the money. Not even in a Man City, Newcastle way, at least they fill their stadiums.

Are we going to be at a turning point in 15-20 years where the literal best players go to the Middle East?

Maybe the knock on effect of that is Burnley can become competitive in the top flight.

I was talking to a player a couple of weeks ago (not Burnley) and was discussing the behind closed doors season. He asked me how it was and I said crsp having to watch your team on tv. He said it was dreadful playing without a crowd.

Just reported on SSN - a full Championship programme over the last two days and not one home win.

Do they not have spectators in these stadiums? Or defenders, for that matter? Brownhill just ran right through motionless opponents. No one seemed to move a muscle. Looks like a bundle of laughs out there.

Saudi football does have a deep tradition. Al Shabab is almost 80 years old and has won the Saudi title 6 times. They were competing before the money came into whole scenario. They had an impressive array of trophies in the corridor down to their exec area. Most of the of rather scant set of supporters were in the same stand as the cameras so it is a bit of a false impression from the view on that clip. But still I’d put the total crowd at not much more than 4 figures. It was over 30 degrees for most of the evening so some lethargy in the 90+ minutes would be expected, and Brownhill was much fresher having come on at 72 mins. He was also a step above what had been on show, much more direct and stronger. They also had rent a mob coordinated supporter groups with megaphones and pre written chants and drums . Without that you would have heard every eord on the pitch.
