Brownhill

Post by Goliath » Sun Oct 05, 2025 4:37 pm

We miss him massively. He led our press even when not playing well and gave us a goal/assist threat.

Could be wrong but I think we'd have stuck with the midfield 3 if he'd stayed as It suited him perfectly. The problem we have now is our best 3 midfielders are all defensive types. Hannibal is the closest we have but he doesn't get the numbers.

Of all the things we miss, Brownhill isn't one.

Brownhill wasn’t up to the Premier League. We do not miss him. We might next season though.

What we miss is Ugochukwu, Cullen and Florentino playing in the same team.

In his best position on the right of a 3 where Parker used him a lot last season and he got 18 goals with 6 assists?

Where he sometimes played for us in the PL too.

I'm rather stating the obvious here, but his numbers wouldn't be anywhere close to those at this level.

That was his 'monster' season. Not sure he'll ever repeat that. Parker allowed him to roam free when we had possession, to trust his instincts.
He'll probably never get that freedom again.

When? He was either alongside Cullen/Berge or a number 10. We didn't really use a 433.

He was effectively a number 10 last season... anyway, I saw more than enough of him in the PL to know he isn't the answer to our current predicament.

Big Les can play Brownhills role absolutely fine, just hasn’t had the chance to yet.

He's basically the polar opposite of Brownhill. Great on the ball but ambles round the pitch and doesn't make any of the off the ball runs Brownhill made to get into scoring positions

In the Championship.

Unless you only started watching Burnley last season, you'd know Brownhill isn't good enough for the Premier League.

It's not about whether he's the same type of player, it's whether he can replace him, which I agree I think he can.

Our next fixture is the perfect chance for Parker to start these 3 and go 4 at the back.

Let's see.

Josh Brownhill has shown on numerous occasions that he is Burnley personified.
Not quite up to it in the Premier League but superb in the championship.
There weren't to many suitors queueing up for him once he made it clear he wasn't staying with us.

I know it's early days but I can't imagine Florentino playing in the Championship, he looks a real quality addition who belongs at this level.

But we can't be thinking about next season yet. We're one point off 17th after a really tough first 7 games, and are looking more competitive this time despite the results.

He still makes those runs. We just won't find them as often naturally. He got 4 goals last time.out when he was in and out of the side and out of position.

We lack balance and he would have offered it. We've ended up changing system completely due to his exit.

Cullen being our most advanced central midfielder in the first half shows how much we miss Brownhill’s pressing and much better eye for goal.

Club wanted to keep him and he didn’t want to stay.

We’ve got options but Parker chooses not to use them (Flemming, Edwards, Tresor, even Anthony as a 10).

We didn't replace him though, that's the problem. He was the leader and literally led the press and helped to get us on the front foot.

We did, just not an exact replica.

Who does Brownhill replace out of Ugochukwu, Cullen and Florentino?

Florentino is on loan from Benfica, if we get relegated he’s gone.

It’s an obligation to sign permanently, regardless of what happens. Benfica announced it.

Well Ugochukwu didn't start and Laurent did so it's not exactly outlandish. It doesn't really matter, one of the 3 would drop out because they do similar jobs.

As it is I'd play those 3 together but I'm assuming that's why Parker hasn't done so far

Definitely doesn’t amble around. His introduction today was the main reason we managed to get higher up the pitch in the last 15-20 minutes. Is he going to play the number 10 role like Brownhill did, no. Nor should he. In the premier league we need 3 genuine central midfielders, as otherwise we will get overrun. But is he the midfielder that I think could be the most advanced of our 3, due to his ability to cover ground with the ball, absolutely.

Well yes. If people just decide to not engage with things they don't agree with then it probably will be dead.

Not sure why people are suggesting it's such an outrageous opinion that our captain from last season who got 18 goals from midfield might have been of some assistance.

Think “we’re crap” is a somewhat simplistic assessment.

We have a much bigger budget relative to our competition when we go down, which is why you think we’re good, and a much lower one compared to our competitors when we come up. We’re not actually “crap” at all. We’re just a town club competing against some of the elite clubs in the world.

But yeah, maybe a reduced appetite amongst fans for watching that struggle.

An unnecessary elaboration, but your last sentence is probably correct.
