Re: Were you here...?
Shortly before Hereford game I won clarets revival draw. Got free tickets for directors box and awarded cheque on pitch at h/t. Went with sykoclaret and had pint with Hereford directors. (No sign of our board at all). After game we went to leave and doorman told us it was too dangerous to leave as fans were protesting. We said let us out we want to join them. Oh what a horrible day that was!
Re: Were you here...?
How much did it cost to be a match ball sponsor back then?
I was not born until 1987 so fortunately missed out on all the proper rubbish.

Re: Were you here...?
Can't remember to be honest but we got four tickets and it was a complete farce.Inchy wrote:How much did it cost to be a match ball sponsor back then?
1. No one had allocated any seats for us so they shoved us in the old directors box in the cricket field stand on our own.
2. Went down, as was traditional then, to hand the ball to the referee and have the photo's taken. Photographer hadn't turned up because the club owed him money.
3. We were invited into what is now the Harry Potts Lounge after the game where, despite being sponsors, were ignored by everyone except director Bernard Rothwell who, at the top of his voice, said to some steward type bloke: "What are these four doing in here? Get them out." He didn't get us out, but he sure as hell got a mouth full from me.
4. Big thanks to three players that night after the game who were brilliant with my guests - Joe Gallagher, Leighton James and Billy Rodaway.

C/T we used to (indeed still do) drink in Talbot before game. Beer in Bob Lord directors lounge was dearer than pub. Another reason we wanted out after match. Seem to remember though we were "encouraged" to go at final whistle. So you probably did ok out of match ball sponsorship!

I'm pretty sure that I've still got the programme for the Colchester one. I'll post a pic later if I find it.
Does it still count for the Hereford one if you left about 10 minutes into the second half?

Re: Were you here...?
Stood on the Bee Hole end for the Hereford game - still cant believe that on arrival some bloke was stood in my 'spot' behind the goals and I had to move to a less crowded area! Happy days !
Re: Were you here...?
We really were a shambolic club back then.
In the early 90s I remember people referring to the Burnley board as a private drinking club. I can imagine it now. Smokey men in crap suits lording over the club acting like big shots because they are 10 bob millionaires

Re: Were you here...?
My mate Brian and myself run the supporters coaches back then. Brian was concerned that it was Bank Holiday weekend which then would bring notoriously heavy traffic on the M5. He decided a midnight departure might be in order to ensure getting there in ample time. After it was all organised, Torquay moved the kick off from 3 p.m. to evening (7:15 I think) so we had something like 13 hours to kill once we got there.gc14 wrote:Yes to both.. I`m sure against Wolves it could have been 7 or 8. If memory serves, Bull/Mutch went on the rampage and had a couple of goals ruled out. Bull was a monster!!!!ralph wrote:Rochdale at home was bad we'd hammered Crewe in the previous home game ... Preston at home made fools of us after we'd had a couple of decent results .. The aforementioned Hereford match was absolutely awful...can recall the protest too. At least you could get reduced price pies on the way off the Bee Hole End.

I was 16 at the time, caught it from Rawtenstall about 11pm, some great characters on the coach back then and of course some sadly no longer with us .. Remember calling in a newsagents just after getting off the coach and the shopkeeper recognised the accent straight away, turned out he had moved down from Burnley.. Called in for a paper and a drink but he insisted of giving me a carrier bag of goodies for the " journey home" he said ! Chocolates, drinks and a selection of magazines of the 'adult' variety

Did not go the Colchester game but went Hereford. These were miserable depressing times to be a Burnley supporter, they truly were. I can't believe it when I hear some sad case say, that there best times watching the clarets was in the old 4th division days.
Ok, we won the 4th division under Mullin, but it took us 7 years of watching totally dross football and watching our team in front of gates of just a couple of thousand and visiting poxy away grounds.
Thank god for Barry Kilby, who came along and rescued the club from another possible dose of 4th tier football. If he had not have come in I am quite confident, we would have had to live through another Orient type experience

Re: Were you here...?
Had a season ticket that year. Row K in the Cricket Field Stand, next to the tunnel. But...
Was grounded for the Colchester game for giving my mum some verbals and refusing to apologise to her. My brother went on instead.
Yes for the Hereford game. It's the first and only time I've seen Clarets fans throwing season tickets on the pitch at the end.
I feel privileged to have witnessed that season, not because it was fun (it wasn't fun by any stretch of the imagination) but because it gives me a sense of perspective for these heady days in the Premier League.

A good point which bares similarities to those who claim to prefer watching us in the Championship after a couple of great promotion campaigns when we could very easily be back watching the dross Cotterill served up prior to Coyle's promotion seasonTop Claret wrote:Did not go the Colchester game but went Hereford. Re: Were you here...?
I wasn't at the Colchester game, I attended the annual bonfire on our street.
I still believe when people discuss the Hereford drubbing they look directly at the score line and say it couldn't get much worse, but that wasn't the worst performance. Rochdale at Home on New Years Day was truly horrendous, about as bad as paid sportsmen can play I would say.
Against Hereford at home we should have had four ourselves we missed some absolute sitters. I also read above somebody criticising Tony Woodworth but he was really only at fault for one of the goals. And the goal Stewart Phillips scored too complete his hat trick was a truly sensational strike, a volley from the edge of the area which rocketed into the top corner.. Hereford played in White Shirts Black Shorts and Red Socks that day. I try and try but I cannot erase it from my memory!

After the miserable defeat there was a protest outside the Bob Lord stand by some fans.
There were about 15 of them chanting and waving their fists at us as we had a post-match pint in the sponsor's lounge or whatever it was. Even the protests were struggling for numbers.
I presume they must have thought we were directors, although me and my mate were only in our mid-twenties.
It was the most depressing experience I've ever had on the Turf and the attendance was 1874, not the year.

Re: Were you here...?
There are some standout moments from that season and others that I can barely recall. For example, we thumped Crewe at home, we beat the runaway league leaders Northampton too. And I can still recall Leighton James' free kick at the Cricket Field End against Southend in a 2-1 win (a 'tubby' Leighton James beating a very tubby Jim Stannard). But other details have been lost in the fog of time which is hardly surprising given it was 30 years ago and I was only 11.
Anyway, the question I have is for some of you older ones: At what point in the season did it dawn on you that we were massively up sh!t creek? I recall thinking we were safe after beating Rochdale at Spotland but it went spectacularly tit-shaped in the following couple of weeks.

Re: Were you here...?
My answer is a no and yes. What always amazed me about following Burnley around that time was how, whenever it reached a point where I would think "this really is the pits, it can't get any worse than this", it actually did.... much, much worse. It was like falling into the Mariana Trench - our downfall seemed to be infinite and never ending. Until that final game of the season....
Re: Were you here...?
Yes and yes joined in all the protests and told Jack Simmons were to go when he came out to the fans and it was so obvious he was a clueless imbecile.

Yes and yes. I recall the 6-0 home defeat very well it was ingrained in my Clarets memory bank. It's what gives me perspective when we don't spend £20m in the transfer window or we can't beat a ten man Man City team

The afternoon of that Hereford game, I was playing football for Outwood Common Social Club in Billericay and was having a beer in the bar afterwards as the results came in – I was just stunned at the result, I went and sat down heavily at a table, and the team skipper came over and put a consoling hand on my shoulder. I thought the Clarets could hardly be worse than at that moment… Little did I know that come the end of the season we would be staring into the abyss, or that the weekend after the Hereford game I would wreck my MCL on a frozen pitch.

Re: Were you here...?
I've had a season ticket since 1972, but with the exception of just 3 seasons where I just HAD to draw the line on the orders of my doctor as I was becoming suicidal!! Those were 1985/6,1986/7 & 1987/8 and I'm actually somewhat ashamed of myself in retrospect! I actually think what made that period worse was that in 1982 we'd actually been promoted as Division 3 champions with a good team and we all thought we were on our way back! Those who think the 80s was ALL garbage might forget that. Anyway, at least following Wembley '88 I got back in the saddle and back to doing home regular and away trips. That still meant watching some absolute rubbish on and off, but as others have said, the friendships and the bonds which were formed in those tough times still endure today AND it gives a sense of perspective to things like our poor showing at West Ham in a PL game the other week!!!

I will be honest with you Maccer I know Tony very well. I actually lodged at his house for over 12 months in the early noughties and we are mates. He is a proud Manc and his parents still live there. He is a decent raconteur is Tony, The stories he tells about the Hereford game are actually hilarious. And the story of his night out with his in laws after the match is even funnier. Re: Were you here...?
mmm the 80's second half of 79-80 was abysmal .. 80-1 passable .. 81-2 great season after a terrible start... 82-3 an opportunity missed ... 83-4 a gamble failed ... 84-5 very poor ... 85-6 a nothing season poor ... 86-7 enough said .... 87-8 opportunity missed by reaching Wembley ie:play-offs blown completely thinking of the AMC Final .... 88-9 good start then abysmal ... 89-90 another mundane poor season ...
