Heaton 9*
Lowton 8
Mee 8
Keane 8
Ward 8
Boyd 8
Defour 6
Marney 5
Hendrick 9
Barnes 7
Gray 6

Barton 7
Vokes 6

A great result against a very technically strong team. The defending was resilient and gave the opposition relatively few clear cut chances compared to the away fixture.

We are not so goo and if we are going to strengthen in the window then attacking midfielders or forwards are required.

Heaton - 8. Smart reflex save in the first half, the double save at the end of the game was superb.
Lowton - 7. Very good game, intelligent distribution and got stuck in where it mattered.
Keane - 7. Solid, dependable performance. Very organised and calm when in control of the ball.
Mee - 7. Struggled a bit in the first half, but got better as the game wore on.
Ward - 7. Good engine, got up and down the wing a lot and did a lot of the 'ugly' things very well.
Defour - 6. Looked lost on the wing for me today, and faded somewhat in the second half.
Marney - 6. Not up to his usual high standards with one or two misplaced passes, but I am not complaining.
Hendrick - 7. Thought he had a good game today, stuck to his task well and looked to get forward where he could.
Boyd - 7. Covered a lot of the pitch today and made a lot of good interceptions to break their play up / set up chances for us.
Barnes - 6. Not much came off for him today, but he was still a presence.
Gray - 6. Van Dijk had him in his pocket, couldn't get free of their defensive line.

Barton - 8. Welcome back Joey. A clever free kick, and good game management after that to see the game through.
Tarkowski - 6. Played the ball into the corner when it mattered at the end of the game.
Vokes - 6. Looks a bit rusty for me.

A game where there was not so much in it was settled by a moment of quality from JB. Heaton's double save at the end was important as well. Two seasons ago we would have lost those games, but now there is more quality and know how with our players to ensure we end up on the right side of these games. In the top 10 of the premier league, it's important we remember these moments and cherish them. Keep it going Burnley.

Heaton 9 top class. Could probably call it the usual.
Lowton 8 another who's improving
Keane 8 good
Mee 9 apart from the slip I thought he was excellent.
Ward 8 very good with little help
Boyd 7 better 2nd half.
Hendrick 8 really growing into his role.
Marney 5
Defour 6 struggled at times out of position and left Ward exposed
Barnes 7 worked hard
Gray 6 tough for him

Heaton 8 - 2 or 3 quality saves but little else to do.
Lowton 8 - solid.
Keane 8 - solid.
Mee 8 - if only he could pass well he would be worth mega millions.
Ward 8 - Usual solid display. Does a decent job going forward too.
Boyd 7 - workmanlike as usual but offered little else.
Hendrick 9* - busy everywhere. Gets stuck in with strength and skill. Always offered an outlet.
Marney 5 - the injury he is carrying was really obvious today. Poorest display I've seen from him.
Defour 7 - some good touches and his workrate is improving.
Barnes 6 - lots of effort but looked outclassed for the first hour or so.
Gray 6 - lots of effort but totally dominated by Dick Van Dyke. Trying to feed on scraps.

Barton 7 - Welcome back Joey. Scored and used his nous to break up several Southampton moves.
Vokes 5 - rather ineffective and a bad miss.
Tarks - didn't really notice him at all after he came on.

From a reasonably good stream on t`internet...

Heaton - 9 a tremendous keeper who saved us 2 points at the death with a wonderful double save
Lowton - 8 a good all-round game barring 2 or 3 disappointing crosses
Keane - 8 back to looking his calm and confident self after 2 or 3 indifferent performances
Mee - 8 barring one slip in the first half was in control - Mr Burnley for me
Ward - 9 thought he was EXCELLENT throughout and covered the centre halves on a couple of occasions. Don`t see the need to recruit a `better` left-back. Man of the Match for me.

Boyd 6 / Defour 6 - mystified why Boyd was central (in my eyes anyway) and Defour pinned on the left. Thought they both struggled to impose themselves on the game.
Marney - 6 he is a fantastic player but think he`s been a bit off recently and another stupid booking.
Hendrick - 8 looked REALLY good in the first half and was the standout midfielder throughout until Sir Joey`s arrival.

Barnes - 7 not at his bustling best nor brilliant in concert with Gray but did enough to keep their mob busy and showed his versatility on the left.
Gray - 6 looked lively but suffered with a poor supply line so very little to rate.

Barton - 9 even without the goal I thought he instantly owned the game and barring one loose ball, was imperious. Dyche gonna have some tough decisions to make in the midfield area, me thinks.
Vokes - 6 didn`t see the `sitter` he supposedly missed
Tarkowski - not on long enough for a rating but he ALWAYS looks SO assured.

A BRILLIANT 3 points from a non-brilliant performance. Shows incredible mental toughness and togetherness.

Heaton 8-Double save at the end saved us 2 points.
Lowton 8-Looking better with every game
Keane 8-Another commanding performance
Mee 8-Born defender, thought he was excellent
Ward 7-Steady as ever
Boyd 8-Gives absolutely everything.
Hendrick 8-Another whose improving with every game.
Marney 6-Not at his best but hasn't looked 100% for last few games to me.
Defour 6-Poor game by his high standards
Barnes 9*-I thought he was outstanding.
Gray 6-Think he needs to be more savvy in knowing when to run down the channels.

I'd like to give Joey top marks for a fairytale return, but as he rightly said it was about the team. Besides the goal he made a big difference when he came on and got me thinking about dropped points especially against Hull and Arsenal.

An enjoyable albeit not fluent game of football. Thought we gave as good as we got against a good established premier league team.

Heaton - 8 - I thought he should have done better with Rodriguez' initial effort for the double save, but the follow up was brilliant and the difference in the quality of his handling and Forster's was shown on more than one other occasion, too.

Lowton - 7 - Caught out once in the first half when he went for an interception, missed it, and allowed Tadic to flash a volley wide, but apart from that had a really good game in both halves of the pitch.

Ward - 8 - Absolutely reliable and solid all afternoon.

Keane - 8 - Played most of the game in second gear, but on a couple of occasions when he needed to shift up the gears to make blocks, he did so.

Mee - 8 - Had much more to do thann Keane because Long inevitably targeted him, and he was beaten once or twice (although I'mm not sure they were errors exactly), but I thought the relatively few chances Southampton and Long created were testament to how well he coped.

Hendrick - 8 - Apart from 15 minutes at the end of the first half when he got a touch ragged, he matched composure and class to physical presence to make himself the most imposing midfielder on the pitch. Maturing fast into a proper player at this level.

Marney - 5 - Well off the pace, presumably because of injury.

Defour - 5 - Looked and played like a player out of position. Fair play to him for doing his best diligently, though.

Boyd - 7 - Indefatigable, but occasionally a bit ragged technically.

Barnes - 6 - Struggled to gain a foothold in the physical battle with the Southampton centre backs, but still caused the Southampton defence problems.

Gray - 6 - In an out of the game against a well drilled defence, but most of our good stuff involved him getting us up the pitch, either by winning throws picking the ball up in the channels.

Barton - Not on long enough, but showed exactly why he can be such an important signing for us with a free kick which won't win awards for technical ability, but was a brilliant example of footballing intelligence. Generally, I thought he was taken out of the game a few times by the speed at which Southampton moved the ball, which might be rustiness, but he also found the time to play a couple of smart passes, make some crucial interceptions and generally help us manage the game.

Vokes - Again not on long enough, but a useful additional outlet.

We probably didn't deserve the win, but against a decent Southampton side with dangerous players, our tenacity and ability to dig deep meant that we won the day. The goal is 2 parts technical ability, 2 parts luck, but 6 parts pure canniness and intelligence from Barton (you could see him ask Hendrick to get into the wall whilst Southampton were messing about with the wall, so he clearly meant it), and in truth that was the first serious threat to Forster's goal in the game.

That said, it hass perhaps gone unnoticed that we were really short out wide today, and we missed both Gudmundsson but perhaps more particularly, Arfield (the way in which Defour struggled to step into the centre and then get back to cover the switch out wide demonstrated how important he and Boyd are to the way we play). The fact we managed to grind out a huge win without them is testament to how far we've come in the last 2 years.

The job isn't done yet, but it would be one hell of a collapse to fail to survive from here. One really pleasing thing is that at the start of the season it was the likes of Marney, Ward and Boyd who were really keeping us competitive (plus Heaton, Keane and Mee of course). Gradually others who are the key to us establishing ourselves at this level, like Lowton, Gray, Gudmundsson and Hendrick are beginning to pick up the slack. That augurs really well for the rest of the season.

Plenty of candidates but I'm going with Tom for the Man of the Match because of a number of vital saves but in particular the last one.

I thought the whole team did well. Marney a bit off. Gray only wanting the ball over the top. Boyd's legs intercepting everywhere. Hendrick powering his way around the midfield. Barton was made to look like he wasn't there a couple of time, in his short spell. Back four super - Ward outstanding. However, the assuredness of Tom Heaton doinf everything from the simple to the expert outshone Floundering Forster at the other end and gave the team that confidence and leadership. hence, my MOM. Proud to be a Claret.
