Defending for the first

Post by Clarettintedlense » Sun Jan 22, 2017 4:31 pm

Why were there four men on Mustafi and none on back post?

Bad enough we didnt win the header with so many men. No man on the post (like last time) criminal.

Gutted. We deserved a point at least. We matched them. At least it gives us confidence for the next away games. Weve now played all but one of the top 6 away.

Not the first time this season we've been punished by not putting men on the post.... Remember the last kick V Hull, a man on each post would mean it's almost impossible to score, we leave both posts unprotected and the rest is history.
Just another example of why we should have men on posts today.

I know a goalkeeper whose played to a reasonable standard. He tells me that men on the posts is generally the keepers call over the manager who will go with the keepers judgement.

He said the general rule of thumb is if the keeper likes to come and collect the corner he puts a man on either post. If the keeper prefers to stay back on his line he uses one man on one post and the spare man too mark and backs his shot stopping ability to keep the header out.

A man on each post is such a basic requirement in any game at any standard for a corner.

Fair enough. But a lot of highly paid professionals don't do it, they must have a reason. Unless it's just to annoy the spectators who really do know what's best..

Although annoyingly Defour did go the post for the corner after the goal. Surely he hadn't forgot for the previous corner . Although they took a lot of short corners early on so perhaps Heaton felt he wanted the box clearing quickly and it was one less man to get out. Who knows **** happens..

I would say that is pretty much the way it is, Rocket.

Certainly, in more recent games, we have always put a man on the back post
Poor defending for the first goal and nobody marking Koscienly for the second
These are basic mistakes that we need to sort

There were men on the posts for corners before the goal but because Arsenal played 4 or 5 corners out along the edge of the penalty area we moved them out to be able to close down.

Good tactic by them. A bit like 5 outswingers followed by an inswinging yorker.

Bit irrespective of them mixing it up the basics should remain the same. Two men on post. That still leaves us with at least enough men to mark every player.

I honestly don't think it's as simple as basics. Heaton will have known before the corner was taken he had nobody on the far post. I think their will be a solid reason (obvious to Tom) why that was.
