What happens with the lino
If officials make clear high profile mistakes what happens?
The lino had a shocker.
How do we know something has happened within referees circles to improve his performance?

I'm not sure that we should know.
It wasn't an overly difficult decision, he was very well positioned. Koscielny did step back to avoid the offside but didn't make it on side ahead of the ball being played. This made it more difficult for the linesman but he should have seen it based on his placement.

Re: What happens with the lino
Do linesman have t watch when the ball is kicked AND view down the line to see if he is offside, or do they just listen for the ball being struck?
Always wondered. It's probably a stupid question.

Lino made a complete hash of it and it wasn't even a close call !DCWat wrote:It wasn't an overly difficult decision, he was very well positioned.

I imagine they'll watch the ball in their peripheral vision.

Re: What happens with the lino
Not a stupid question... They do though have to rely on seeing when the ball is played and judging the offside too... Can be difficult especially when a winger is very close as he would also have to check for ball in and out of play and fouls..... And the offside.Claretmatt4 wrote:Do linesman have t watch when the ball is kicked AND view down the line to see if he is offside, or do they just listen for the ball being struck?

But whilst i haven't seen a tv replay of todays final goal i would imagine it should have been pretty straightforward to get right... The *******.

Re: What happens with the lino
Don't understand why officials get demoted if they can get decisions wrong in the top league why should lower leagues get punished for them being so inept. Found myself for the first time agreeing with Danny Mills in that they should simply miss the next game.

I agree, an easy decision to get right in slow motion.

An easy decision to get right when it's your literal job to do that.

Exactly they are well paid professionals. Not like his vision was blocked.

Re: What happens with the lino
His vision would have been blocked to the player crossing the ball from the far side of the pitch and as the offending player was offside for a split second, therefore a difficult one to give.

Re: What happens with the lino
If you look at the pic in the Ben Mee thread there appear to be a couple of players in the line's line of sight. In any case the Arsenal player is probably offside for one second. Not easy to spot & difficult to see in real time even on the tele.
Re: What happens with the lino
If officials simply cant cope with the pace of the PL and that leads to them making wrong decisions at critical phases of games then technology is the only option.
it works in other sports without delays then so I can't see why it can't work in the PL

It'll be those people who think they are just paid to watch the line and not what's happening in play that think it's an easy job Tom...TomBenderson wrote:So for all the rocket scientists who think it's easy to do that job, give us your solution as to how we get the right people, people like yourselves who would always get it right, into these jobs as assistant refs? What is it that will lure you from NASA, neurosurgery, your FTSE 100 directorships or sitting in your underpants all day drawing the dole to take up the job? I mean it's bizarre. There are quite literally thousands of you up and down the country on message boards pointing out how easy it is when your club gets the wrong end of a decision. Why has the vision (literal and metaphorical) you'd bring to the role gone unnoticed? It's astonishing they've missed you all in their recruitment.
I presume the answer to this is equally easy. Pray tell.
