My mum only ever went to one game and that was it. She was sat in the Deerplay after the match bright red faced still raging at the Liverpool thuggish tactics.
Never liked Liverpool from that day to this.

I believe that's when Derek Scott threw himself, headfirst, at a ball on the CFS touchline. Deserved a medal !
Then again, I could have dreamt it

Remember that my dad got head butted by a scouser. We were just going in via the turnstile when it happened. Remember a trickle of blood ran down his forehead and my dad legging it after the scouse two hat.
My dad was 6' 7" and built like a certain outside convieniance ! He did catch him.
What happened next can not be reported !!!!!

Was in CFS for this. I remember the matchball going into the away end and being thrown back on the pitch 10 minutes later stabbed!
Think Bruce Grobelaar had a stone masons chisel thrown at him from the Bee Hole End if my memory is correct. Great win on the night.

Indeed it was - he'd played his last game in January in Brian Miller's last game as manager first time round.Holtyclaret wrote:Only a few weeks after my Dad retired, I was only nine at the time.

Also remember the 3 nil at their place. I spent the whole 90 minutes in fear I was going to be squashed to death in that corner.

I remember him coming home and ranting about being taken to away games as 13th man (in the days of one sub). His business interests were fast overtaking his football and he felt the time was right.
So much I'd like to ask him about. Found his old contracts the other day and they're fascinating, such small figures compared to these days!

It was a great night, I was on the Bee Hole to the left of goal. Bittersweet memories after Scott had missed his chances at Anfield, my only ever trip there, crammed in, never heard The Kop sing all night. Leaving or trying to only to find the gates shut which made the crush worse, then some nutter of a copper jumping through the gate, truncheon in hand threatening to hit anyone that tried to leave. What a warm, family friendly way to end an evening.

My mum queued up and got me a ticket bless her. I drove down in the morning from Arbroath (45 Cdo RM), and as a sort of thank you to my mum and dad for getting me a ticket I brought my 3 and a half year old son in the car for them to see and look after whilst I was at the game. After the match I drove home and picked my son up, couldn't really speak as my voice had gone. On the drive back at around 3.30 in the morning, being the only car in Scotland on a road I was stopped by the police and checked. Firstly I had no voice, secondly I had a small child in the back surrounded by sweets, drinks, crisps and anything else I deemed appropriate to keep him amused if awake. It took me 15 minutes to convince the police I had been to see Burnley v Liverpool and the small sleeping child in the back was mine. The only good thing that came out of that stop was that I was wide awake for the remainder of the journey.

I was at both games. I always felt that if we hadn't shown them so much respect, we would have got to the final. Scotty should have put us ahead at Anfield. Dreadful miss.

Scotty missed more than one good chance at Anfield. Thought we played really well that night and the 3-0 scoreline hardly did our performance justice.

I went to both games - I was 15. Can't remember who took me to the away leg but I was on the Longside for the home game. How on earth did we not come away from Anfield with something given the chances we had?
Was that the season we also got to the quarters of the FA cup (getting battered in a replay at Sheff Weds) and also relegated? Or am I merging 3 seasons into one?

Hate to say it but was probably a good job that none of his chances went in given how tightly packed we were in that corner.

Nobody has mentioned Trevor Steven. He took Liverpool apart that night My memories are of us winning 1-0 but we could easily have got 3. Long side was rocking and I ended up down the front after an almighty surge following the goal.

I went to both games as a 13 year old. Went to Anfield with a school friend and his Dad and we were in the main stand, not in the away end. I remember at the final whistle that an old Scouser behind us shook our hands and told us we'd deserved better than 0-3.
I don't remember much about the home leg, I got on early, in the Longside, I remember that 'Land Down Under' song from Men At Work was all over the tannoy, that we won by not enough and the Longside singing 'We're Proud of You' to the team, even before the match had finished, I think. Was a big achievement just beating Liverpool in those days.
Very weird season, we under achieved massively in the League. Great cup runs though.

Trevor Steven and Kevin Young were terrific in that first leg at Anfield. We created three clear cut chances and missed the lot and that cost us.TheOriginalLongsider wrote:Nobody has mentioned Trevor Steven. I was selling said programmes on that game in the Bob Lord stand. Got halfpence a programme for the first 100 I sold and 1p per programme thereafter.
Sold loads and got the princely sum of £2.50. Although I did get free admission plus a free pie!

I was at both games - it was actually my first trip to Anfield. Was it that game in which Ruddock should have been given his marching orders? I also remember the Scotty miss, and the feeling before the game about their "famous" fans, "really?" I had grown up believing them to be exemplary, true football fans, but quickly discovered they were quite as neanderthal as were Cardiff's

Remember it very well I stuck £50 on Burnley at a whopping 10/1.
Given that we had missed numerous chances at Anfield I thought the odds were a touch on the generous side.
And so it proved.

From what I can remember of the second leg we battered them.
We did only score one but God only knows how.

No trouble and don't remember being held back from exiting ground!
Remember it being a bit scary walking to car through Stanley Park though!

Unfortunately the tie was over before the game down the Turf. We were struggling in the league and were never likely to get anywhere near to reducing the deficit.
I went to both games, was working in Yorkshire at the time and took time off on the sick for the first game as I knew a holiday wouldn't be granted....Of course they all knew where I was...
What do I remember....Trevor Steven was class and it was only time before we lost him, Burnley put up a spirited fight at the Turf...and I think I remember Dalglish going in the referees book.

I was working in Bamber Bridge at the time, and for the home game the train was full of scousers. I was so pleased with the home win.

Different game pal. Maybe one of our later cup escapades. Ruddock didn't start playing till the late 80's.NRC wrote:I was at both games - it was actually my first trip to Anfield. I went to both games - I had just turned 16.
I went to Anfield in Derek Gill`s car - he drove. I was friends with his son.
Derek Scott missed a sitter - from memory it was 0-0 at the time (or possibly 1-0)....we were still in the game.
That was my first trip to Anfield aswell
I was at St Teds and we got the yellow away kit donated to us by Burnley FC - I remember the first game we played in them grabbing Trevor Stevens old shirt and wearing it. Think it was no 4 or no 8 ?

Re: Burnley Vs Liverpool Milk Cup Semi Fina l2nd Leg 15.02.83
I went to both as a 10 year old with my family.
I recall being scared at Liverpool. There was trouble flaring and Scouse aggression was palpable.
What strikes me is Liverpool playing their first 11 in a league cup replay despite being 3-0 up from the first leg. Those really were the days for cup football - how much that has changed. No wonder there was a capacity crowd.
Until the 3-0 defeat at Anfield Liverpool were my favourite non-Burnley side, but the feeling of injustice (possibly inaccurate descriptions of a hotly disputed penalty and an offside goal by david hodgson) made me believe Liverpool were cheats. I pretty much detested them for years after that (in typical nonsensical fashion). This was heightened when Steven went to Everton - and the toffees improved - I much preferred them.

I'm amazed it took to post 30 to mention Lawros clearance off the line.
We murdered them that night. 3-0 first leg lead had sent them to sleep.
Went 1 up; very quickly after came his unbelievable defending, fantastic pace and commitment.
If we'd gone two up I'm sure we'd have won.

Went to both games. Sat behind the goal at the Anfield Road End. Derek Scott missed two glorious chances just before half time and then they went 1 up with an og from Brian Flynn who in the first half at least was asked to man-mark Graeme Souness. Too much to do in the second leg but Hansen did clear off his goal line just after we scored. Been to Anfield on a number of occasions for different Cup games and the only joy for me there was a 1-1 draw in the league cup when Peter Noble put us ahead. Not a happy hunting ground but I did see the 1-0 win there in 74 and my brother saw us win 2-1 there in 62 just after they had got into the then First Division. Ray Pointer scored a screamer that day referred to as ' the shot that rocked the Kop'

If you look at the stats in that programme you can see in the early season:
Aug 31 Bury A 5-3
Sep 4 Middlesbrough A 4-1
Sep 7 Carlisle H 4-1
All but David Holt of the outfield players scored at least once.

Played exceptionally well v Carlisle and set us up for a Saturday home game against Rotherham where we couldn't string two passes together and lost 1-2. Emlyn Hughes played for Rotherham that day.

Re: Burnley Vs Liverpool Milk Cup Semi Fina l2nd Leg 15.02.83
As a London based Claret, I enjoyed the quarter final more having gone to WHL with 2 Spurs mates. However, getting to a semi-final demanded my presence, and I remember hurting from the injustice of the first leg - a scoreline that many/most would read and just think of us a being well beaten and second best, which we know was really down to Scotty's missed chances and I seem to recall two late-ish Rush goals(?) The second leg was excellent, and I recall traveling back to Euston with another fan talking all things Claret. I gave him a lift home somewhere in London in an old MGB which back then I had parked immediately outside the station for free - no getting away with that these days. Turned out the fan I was with reckoned he'd been delivered by my grandfather, who was a doctor in Burnley (and BFC club doctor) back in the day - small world...

Seem to remember being sat behind some Liverpool fans also, don't think they could believe how loud the Burnley fans were that night.
Like as been said on another post the walk back across Stanley Park was interesting, was on one of if not the last coach to leave and a right battle was going on at the top of the road at the traffic lights.
Two possible offside goals also.

Re: Burnley Vs Liverpool Milk Cup Semi Fina l2nd Leg 15.02.83
I went to both games and always remember the scousers near us moaning because the Burnley fans were making too much noise
. Always took the so called Anfield atmosphere experience with a pinch of salt after that.

I was at both games and the following we took to Anfield was amazing and even now I wince when I think of Scott missing that great chance to give us the lead. As stated above 3-0 was not a fair reflection of the game overall. It pretty much killed off the second leg, but it was still a great night and it meant so muh to beat them with all their stars and household names. I remember Taylor almost making it 2 immediately after our goal and if that had sneaked in it might have resulted in a fairy tale. Lawrenson got back and cleared off the line!!

Very, very disappointed in you lot, forty five replies and no link to the Youtube footage of the first leg.

Don't want to be reminded of those first leg Derek Scott misses! I was behind the goal and I can still see it now. Trevor Stevens was terrific that night too I recall. The home leg, watching from the Longside, was immense. I do recall despite losing the pride in ending Liverpool's undefeated run in all matches. Proud Clarets.

I thought I remembered Stevens missing a sitter or something similar in the first game, as I remember was in the Stand at the side, unfortunately, we were not where the coaches were at Stanley park we was passed there and the coppers would not even come down the road they were scared, I saw at least two people robbed by thugs carrying Stanley blades and a mate was slashed as well, managed to get back to coach by skin of my teeth, never liked any scousers since and sadly never will.
