Pub for Watford Game
Does anyone have any recommendation for a decent pub in Watford to accommodate away fans? Planning to take in the Arsenal v Chelsea game at lunchtime...then watch our first away win...then back to pub for England bv France with the funny shaped ball. Cheers

There is a pub in Central Watford [not on the main pedestrianised street where there are several bars..just beyond there towards the ground] which is very much geared up for away fans...very large pub garden at the back...I will try and locate the name...dozens of Clarets in there last time I went..
Big pub right outside Watford Junction station on the right.

As mentioned there's plenty of pubs on the high street. Walkabout will have the football on and has large screens.

Re: Pub for Watford Game
Afternoon All,
Hornet here with some help. There are plenty in and around town. Here are my pick of the best ones that would suit away supporters in my opinion.
Nascot Arms - Experience the best thai food in hertfordshire here. Unfortunately probably one of the smallest pubs in Watford. What with home fans as well, you'll do well to fit in there with enough arm room and a decent unobstructed view of a TV. also a good 30-35 minutes to ground so you'd have to miss the end of the 12.30 to get there in good time.
The Flag - Right outside junction. Massive inside. Massive garden out front in weathers nice. Away fans always welcome. 25-30 minutes walk to ground. Lots of TVs but not sure is they still have sky/bt sports. But you'll have a fair bit of space and a bit of a laugh. Pool tables also included.
The Estcourt Tavern - 5 minutes walk from station, 20 minutes to ground. Mainly home crowd but friendly enough to away. Occasionally frequent there for pre match beverages. Decent amount of TVs. Getting served can take 5 minutes if really busy.
Walkabout - Town Centre. Walkabout is what it is. Sports bar. Plenty of TVs. Cheap dirty lager, welcoming to home and away. Decent amount of banter. Is a fair size so lots of room and. 15-20 minutes to ground.
Columbia Press - Wetherspoons with a tiny bit more class. Not a lot more but it's marginally noticeable. Lots of TVs and ok lager. Right next door to Walkabout.
Malloys - Decent place with good atmosphere. Mostly home but away would be welcome. couple of large screens and few smaller ones. Right next door to Walkabout and Columbia press.
Moon Under Water - Town centre. Wetherspoons pub. Pretty grim and dated but a decent size place and always gets away support in. Don't thin kthey have sports channels so you won't get to watch the game there. 15-20 mins to ground.
Oddfellows - Main away supporters pub. 5-8 minutes to ground. Never been in... oh maybe once about 20 years ago. Looks very scary from the outside, but from what I'm led to believe is ok from the inside.
I'd personally prefer Walkabout or Malloys as an away, or if you're not interested in watching the footy then Moon under water.
Enjoy.

I think Oddfellows was the one I was in a while back - they were serving burgers etc in the back garden which was quite big.

Re: Pub for Watford Game
Oddfellows has been the away fans' pub for many years from what I remember. It's OK, can get a bit full, particularly if the fans can't spill out outside due to the weather. Beer was reasonable, nothing special, and service a bit slow (just due to it being busy). Plenty of screens though and pretty near the ground.

Re: Pub for Watford Game
I would go with the Estcourt Tavern. As stated above it's used by Watford fans but I have never had any bother and it's a likeable trad pub with good beer and good footy viewing on the TVs.

Re: Pub for Watford Game
Any suggestions on which pubs show rugby? I wouldn't mind getting the second half of the England game.
Wetherspoons maybe I guess as they have terrestial TV (although I can't really remember what the Moon under Water had in the way of screens).

Will be there early with son around 12 and going to play a bit of pool in the Rileys pool/snooker club which is on the High Street.
The pub across from the ground is Home fans only though we did go in their once (has to be done) a few years back... Surrey accents help

Re: Pub for Watford Game
Hope you all got a decent drink at least. Saw a few of your fans wandering around the Estcourt Tavern pre-game.

Re: Pub for Watford Game
First time i went to Watford (Waddles first game 1997) there were a couple of Watford lads giving it large from the pub opposite the away end. That ended when a Burnley fan put his fist through the window. Managed a beer in the Odd Fellows on Sat, decent enough garden out the back otherwise it's on the small side. The only ale they sell was Doom Bar which is crap and was off, so bottled Goose IPA was my drink of choice.

Quite a few Burnley fans in the Weatherspoons. Wouldnt let us in Mangans and ended up in Oddfellows which was not a nice pub but had everything you needed, stayed in there till 7pm.

Re: Pub for Watford Game
We got off the train and had breakfast in The Moon Under Water (fine) and enjoyed a good pint in the Estcourt Tavern and the one directly opposite who's name escapes me. Also did The Flag and The Prince George where we had great food and good beer after the game before catching the train. However we made the MASSIVE mistake of trying The Horns at lunchtime!! Words fail me!!

Re: Pub for Watford Game
Well most of my mates had the good sense to travel to Euston and drink around there before taking the train back to Watford before ko. They described Watford as a pub/real ale desert! But I knew best of course and me and my son actually found it ok (just about) The Horns however is a big pub which features live bands in the evenings and may actually generate some atmosphere/custom then, I don't know. On a Saturday lunchtime in February however, they don't bother putting the heating on as there's just the 2 local professional drunks and us 2 in the place! Freezing, dead and dilapidated and just some ubiquitous Doombar to choose from! My son was in open revolt at that point!Leisure wrote:Go on try, I'm intrigued!
