We all knew it would happen anyway, barely even deserves a thread to be honest.

Was always a formality, but had to be done by the law.
Now to the serious business of actually coming up with a strategy that everyone is content with. Easier said than done.

I'm sure there was an enormous threat on Brexit already? Perhaps this could have been added to that?

The only threat really was from the SNP because they refuse to accept democracy and to recognise that they are part of the UK and the UK as a whole voted to leave the EU.

Re: Commons backs brexit.
I wasn't going to comment but someone said "respect democracy" and then criticised people for not respecting it.
That not democracy either, and the sooner those who want to leave realise that and stop going on about people "frustrating the will of the people", the sooner the wounds caused by this can be healed.
Compromise is what is needed now, not f**king Daily Mail soundbites.

It's amazing how many threads the Daily Mail can be brought up in and by so few posters.

I'm using it as an example of extreme Brexitness, that is all.
I'm well aware (thank god!) that fortunately not too many people read it

Re: Commons backs brexit.
Over 48% of MPs should have voted against, if they were that keen on respecting democracy.
It'd still have passed, we'd still have had Brexit. But a little reminder that the country isn't the extreme black and white world that some people like to imagine.

Well, I wasn't. But if people keep forgetting that democracy is actually slightly more than just voting, then I'll keep reminding them gently!

Jeez, Damo I never thought that I'd agree with you on this one, but you are right.
Time to wait and see what we get out of it.
And then kick off again!

It wasn't meant as a negative slant, it's just that you're one (a more reasoned one at least) of about eight posters that I'd expect to see on a thread titled 'Commons backs Brexit'.

The UK economy is now expected to grow 2% in 2017, compared with a November forecast of 1.4%. In its final forecasts before the referendum, in May last year, the Bank had forecast 2.3% for 2017.

Re: Commons backs brexit.
That GDP growth forecast was well above the 1.4% figure policymakers had forecast in November and is in stark contrast to the slowdown predicted by the Bank and others in the wake of last summer’s vote to leave the EU.

Re: Commons backs brexit.
Irrelevant as well to be honest.
Unlikely leave or remain voters are unlikely to care about anything else if they get a chance.
See that daft tool in Richmond handing his seat to the Lib Dems on a plate, and that the inhabitants of Stoke Central about to vote in someone who wants to sell off the NHS to the highest bidder, just because they want Brexit.
Common sense went out of the window when they announced the referendum. Its at the stage now where I never thought it would get to, in which this one thing is going to dominate till at least the next election, if not before.

I see the pound has taken a bit of a hit today .
Re: Commons backs brexit.
Well, the first word of my post was positive; given I do 60% of my billing in dollars it's worked out OK for me at the moment (although if 50% of my friends and colleagues end up being sacked as they are from the EU that would be less positive). I was just pointing our that the forecast was still lower than the pre-brexit forecast. You seem to have ignored that though.RingoMcCartney wrote:That GDP growth forecast was well above the 1.4% figure policymakers had forecast in November and is in stark contrast to the slowdown predicted by the Bank and others in the wake of last summer’s vote to leave the EU.

Re: Commons backs brexit.
Interesting that the BBC have analysed the results and identified that areas of poor education were likely to vote leave and better educated areas voted remain. Also highlighted in the study was that older people tended to vote leave too, and the younger generations voted remain.
So, if you're less educated and old you most likely voted to leave whereas highly educated and young you more than likely voted to remain.

Re: Commons backs brexit.
I think that there can be no doubt that older people were more likely to vote leave than the younger generation, but actually quantifying "poor education" is a dubious statistic, since there has been a massive increase in those going on to higher education in the past 2 decades. It does not necessarily follow therefore that a 70 year old is less educated just because they haven''t got a degree.

Re: Commons backs brexit.
A lad on my fb stated that his parents and their generation were stupid for voting out etc.
He even blamed his parents!
My mum spotted that I'd commented on it and gave him both the proverbial barrels
I don't think he was expecting someone to come along and wipe the floor with him.

The Commons supported triggering Article 50, couldn't not do it really...
Wait a wee while and see all the blocking tactics to ensure that it doesn't happen. A fair few will vote against the no deal option, after the EU fail to offer a fair deal, so they hope we stay in.
