Dyche should get manager of the year if we stop up

Post by Spijed » Fri Feb 03, 2017 9:59 am

If he keeps us up, especially in a good position.

Tony Pullis did for Crystal Palace, but no doubt he had far more to spend and their wage bill would have been many times higher than ours.

It will go to Conte if Chelsea get the title.

I agree, but what made them pick Pullis when he was at Crystal Palace?

It wasn't as though they'd done a Leicester city, or anything that remarkable.

Conte has been fantastic at Chelski but SD would undoubtedly have deserved it if we finish anywhere near current position.

SD has hardly put a foot wrong this year, has learnt from the last time we were up and generously aided by the board has planned and spent well. If only we could travel?

Don't think he even won the Championship manager of the year last season.

No. They gave that to some bloke who's team didn't even make the Play-Off Final.

Quite possibly but I reckon the amount of away point might be a factor. If say, we scrape 3 more away draws and win 3 more at home, the powers that be will give it to Conte. IF however, we register 2 or 3 wins on the road and 3 more home wins, that could tip the balance. IF the poor away form continues, that would see Dyche stay at Burnley, me thinks. If he can show a `bigger` club that he has the flexibility and tactics to win some away games, he could be off.

Haven`t been on here all week due to my kids being sick but it was a magnificent thing against Leicester, Barton`s control and Gray`s power standing out for me.

This was offhandedly suggested on Soccer Saturday the other week.

yes he should, comparitively meagre resources, and up against the might of the players in the best league in the world.

It would be an incredible achievement . looking more than likely too, here's hoping. Its a huge thing for us, if we were to be relegated, it could take forever to return. Teams can fade away almost overnight with lackof income, smaller budgets, players and managers departing. We need this to happen.

if we finish top half he would surely be in contention. He wouldn't win it though as our away form would detract from the achievement, and that would probably be the right choice vs Conte should he win the title

What did Pullis do to make him so deserving of the award?

If he keeps us in the top 10, then I think he's a contender, especially if we do something notable in the cup.

I'm not sure that just keeping Burnley up is enough, though. We were the outstanding team in the Championship last season and we've spent a decent chunk of money since then. Its a good achievement but it isn't in itself remarkable. A friend of mine said to me last season that they thought the gap between the top 7 or 8 teams in the Championship and the worst 6 or 7 in the Premier League wasn't that great, and so far this season has borne that out as correct.

I get a real sense of satisfaction simply seeing the clubs who are currently below us in the league. Should we finish anywhere near where we are now, that would be an amazing achievement for me, far beyond my hopes of just surviving relegation.

But then again Pullis did nothing of any particular note, except getting Palace up the table. It's not as though that hasn't been done before.

As others have said, I think our away form might be the blocker (unless it seriously picks up from here).

It is interesting to consider what Dyche's next step might be. If we have a reasonable finish, then which clubs would be realistic contenders for his signature? Not a cat in hell's chance of any of the top seven coming in for him, nor probably any of the 'best of the rest' unless Pulis throws a wobbly at West Brom or Mark Hughes implodes at Stoke. Why would he want to go to a club that finished below us, most of whom are likely to have far less amenable owners? If Rafa leaves Newcastle, that might be an option, but otherwise, he would genuinely be much better off staying with us.

Yes, but it's potential he'll be interested in. Will he be of the opinion that a mid-table Premier League finish (if we get that) is the best he can achieve at Burnley? If so he'll want a new challenge. Plus other clubs are likely to offer him a bigger salary and more cash to play with in the transfer market.

Last season his team were League Champions, top scorers in the division, joint least goals conceded, won more games than any other team and went half a season unbeaten. They still didn't give him the award so not much chance this season. For some reason they decided that the manager of a team who lost in the play offs was more deserving.....

That isn't right, Spijed. He took over with them seemingly dead and buried at the bottom of the table, and led them to a finish which would have been impressive had he had the whole season, let alone just over half of it. He had an incredible record in that first season at Palace.

They weren't exactly dead and buried as this table shows:

I suspect the reason Hughton got it last year was the unexpected improvement in Brighton from relegation candidates to just missing out on automatic promotion.

This doesn't belittle Dyches efforts - it is no easy matter to return to the Premier League on one season. I thought Steve Bruce did well too but on paper at least he had better players.

Pullis should have won the manager of the season award in 2007-08 for his achievement of keeping Stoke in the Prem - in a similar way to us; a good home record.
