24/01/1970.... Chelsea v Burnley FA Cup round 4..

A special match in Burnley FC history..Clarets losing 2-0 before getting back to 2-2 with a couple of goals from Martin Dobson, the equaliser coming only two minutes from time. The replay caused great excitement in Burnley [and a big crowd] - my dad took me and three other brothers to the replay, the only time he ever went on Turf Moor. We lost the rematch 1-3 and Chelsea went on to win the FA Cup that year. We will need that same belief, passion and never-say-die spirit that was on display here, to get anything in two days time. I think Sunday will be a good day.

I remember the replay well. The Turf was packed with thousands locked outside. Coates opener was superb but Chelsea kicked seven bells of sh*t out of the Clarets that night and eventually they got the equaliser and finally ground the team down. Nowadays half the Chelsea team would have seen red for the challenges that they made but they were a tough team. Ron "Chopper" Harris, David Webb, Eddie Mcreadie and co were possibly the hardest team in the league. The final replay at Old Trafford with Leeds was a war. I think the ref just gave up and let them get on with fighting.

A few years later we also lost 6-3 to them away, perhaps in the Cup too? I remember because I was away at boarding school and tried desperately to point out to the other kids it was really only the same ratio as losing 2-1 ( with little success)

6-2 was the score in the late 70's and we went 1-0 up early on. In 1970 for the replay we only had 3 sides to the ground and I think the nature of the fightback at Stamford Bridge and being on MOTD prompted an unprecedented turnout for the replay. I went with my cousin,uncle and parish priest and the latter two didn't get in. Ralph Coates was at his imperious best but Chelsea just systematically targeted him and 'kicked him' out of the game. In many ways it marked the end of an era for me as about a month later Harry Potts was 'relieved' of his duties................ and not a placard in view demanding it.

That game was 4th round in 1978 but the result was even worse than you remember - it was 6-2.
