21 years ago today - the 3.33 protest and Jimmy Mullen's last game.

Should have shifted to this formation after Hendrick's sending off last weekend.

A sad day for Burnley football club.

The board were always going to let Jimmy take the brunt of it.

Jimmy was the first step on our road to recovery as was Mr Teasdale. The 4th division championship season will always be one of my favourites ... we stirred from our slumber.

P.s

I read your thread title and thought the train to Yuma was 7 mins early . Lol

How did Teasdale start the recovery in your opinion? I just seen it as he appointed Frank Caspers assistant as it was the cheap option.

Nobody expected what happened afterwards.

A pretty embarrassing episode from us I thought, but he had to go, he'd done his job and wouldn't have taken us any further.

On Teasdale , while no cash was flashed the rise back to the old first division , whilst not succesful started to make me, and I personally think many others believe we could have a club to be proud of again?

Was it only the Bob Lord that took part. It was certainly that stand the T.V cameras focused on.

The best bit were we started attacking as the cameras zoomed in and everyone turned back round as the crowd noise went up. Half arsed is the only way to describe it.

It was big news on 'They think it's all over.'

Not sure it was Tony Livesey.
I think it may have been one of the early fanzines ( maybe he wrote in that) behind it.
The time was announced with fireworks going off.

I was in the bar after the game (100 club?) and a group of fans said 'Are you Frank Teasdale?'

'Why, yes I am' says Frank amiably.

'As in 'Teasdale out! Teasdale out!' ?' they all chant.

That was embarrassing.

I was at that game in the Bob Lord stand near the Directors Box. Didn't know what to do so did a polite up and down.

What really annoyed me was Dario Gradi's comments about the crowd.

"They should not be hiring and firing managers. It's absolutely nothing to do with them. Just because they pay their money to come in it doesn't mean they can do that." (12/2/96)

Hi guys. Yes. It was my idea. From memory a group of fans (including a mr scholes) approached me for ideas to be heard. We had a meeting at mechanics and I said we needed to be heard INSIDE the ground and came up with 3.33 idea. Not particularly proud of it considering jimmy mullens departure BUT very proud it gave Burnley fans a genuine voice.

Close. It was the people behind "Who ate all the pies", as well as a certain far right political activist. :(

I don't know what if anything the club have ever done to get Jimmy back to the Turf to do a half time draw or just go on the pitch, he deserves a standing ovation as it was him and his team that started to turn the tide. I know his reasons but how much have we actually tried to get him back ?

Shameful and embarrassing day.
They say a home crowd behind the team is worth a goal start, we lost 1-0 that day if I remember correctly.

Nice to see you on here, I remember you being a regular poster on the old CM back in the day.

As for 3:33. I was in the cricket field and I just remember a load of arguing with the fans behind us who couldn't see!

I see someone was ashamed of that day however at the time many many fans were disenchanted to say the least. The protest was actually called 'backs to the board' and not aimed at players or JM. in fact Jamie Hoyland maintains he had his best two minutes of the season when we weren't watching!! I was a poster on CM - even when I was made '**** of the week'

Teasdale was the chairman when we slumped into the fourth division and went on to escape the drop out of the league.

I wasn't involved in this one Tony - no idea who was to be honest, but I certainly supported it. The whole thing was against the Teasdale administration though and they (the board) quickly turned it on to Mullen who was being forced out in any case by players at the time.

It was better than the regular 'Teasdale Out' demonstrations that went on outside after games, it had an impact. It took another three years to get the club moving forward though once we'd got a new chairman.

Edit: I did attend a meeting at the Mechanics with you but that was in the early Stan Ternent days when Teasdale was still there. I'm sure, although for the life of me I can't recall the reason, there were suggestions for people to dress up as chickens to confront the chairman.

I refused to turn my back, thought it was a bit cringeworthy to be honest. What I did see was that about half of the people in the Bob Lord turned their backs when the firework went off and most were craning their heads round to still watch the game. This and the expression on some of the players faces during the protest was one of the most surreal events I have ever witnessed at a football ground.

I seem to recall a firework being set off behind the bed hole end to signal the start of it!

The protest was called backs to the board if I recall and it was solely aimed at the board. I joined in on the Bee Hole end as the Longside was no more.

Hi Tony(s). Yes, dressing up as a chicken was indeed mentioned at the meeting!

If you recall, this was in the middle of the long-running Shackleton fiasco in which said Mr Shackleton was promising to provide untold riches for the club. Needless to say these never materialised, but the Board, no doubt swayed by his claim that “I have been wined and dined at the House of Lords, and invited to meet members of the Royal Family and the Government on more than one occasion”, swallowed it hook, line and sinker.

He’d just added to his increasingly fantastical claims by stating: “All I have up-front is the £12 million, but that is such small potatoes to my backers…chicken-feed”.

So at the meeting one of the more, er, corpulent members of the group was “volunteered” to don a chicken costume, track down Mr Shackleton and enquire where his meal was. We were then told in no uncertain terms where to stick this idea!!

A moment of light relief on a very sad day. The date of the meeting is relevant: June 16th, 1998. Keith Newton had died that day, aged 56. A true Burnley great.
