Biggest club to ever be relegated out of the league
30 years since we almost went down, we clearly would have been the biggest club to ever go down.
There have been some fairly big sides gone down and some big falls. Bristol Rovers, Carlisle, Luton, Stockport, Oxford, Grimsby, Wrexham.
Down the bottom of the league this season ironically is Orient who are just behind Notts County. If County were to go down, would that be the biggest club ever to go out of the league?
The worlds oldest league club, once had a gate of just shy of 50k and have played in all four leagues and won the FA Cup.
Juventus took their kits from County.

Probably the smallest to have played in the prem though? Smaller than even Bournemouth, Oldham, Barnsley or Swindon?

Luton or Oxford are the only major trophy winners to drop out, I think.

Although not noted as a big club,York City surely have the unwanted honour to be he most populated City/Town to have a Football Club playing non league football.

Solihull and Warrington are a bit bigger than York population wise.
It also depends what constitutes a city or town these days with metropolitan boroughs, pseudo cities and unitary authorities. Some might argue that Stockport, Wirral, Wakefield and Dudley are also bigger by modern definition (I'm strictly a traditionalist personally)

Been to York loads of times, just checked the population and it's over 200k. Didn't realise it was that big.Dazzler wrote:Although not noted as a big club,York City surely have the unwanted honour to be he most populated City/Town to have a Football Club playing non league football.

Rushden and Diamonds
Do they even exist anymore?

Re: Biggest club to ever be relegated out of the league
The old club no. But the fans started a new one.
"Fans announced their desire to create a new fan-owned club called AFC Rushden & Diamonds that would field a senior side in 2012. The new club started its history in the United Counties League Division One."

York really shouldn't be in the position they are in. Will never forget the promotion game there. Wakefield is the largest place to not support a football league team as far as I am aware.

Re: Biggest club to ever be relegated out of the league
I can't see beyond Wrexham. They are apparently the 3rd oldest club in the world, and had a long history of success in the Welsh Cup, with subsequent entry to the Cup Winners Cup, often playing and sometimes defeating the top European clubs such as Porto. They reached the quarter finals in the 70s, only to be defeated by Anderlecht. Their record in English domestic competitions is also pretty good.
They also play at the world's oldest internatiomal stadium which continues to host international football.

Stockport must be the fastest fall through the leagues.
They were in the 2nd tier in the early 2000's.

Re: Biggest club to ever be relegated out of the league
Wakefield as a city only has a population of less than 80,000 according to the census. The Met Borough is indeed about 325,000 but this includes the "Five Towns" of Normanton, Pontefract, Featherstone, Castleford and Knottingley.Blackrod wrote: Wakefield is the largest place to not support a football league team as far as I am aware.
However if we are talking about Met Boroughs then Wakefield is smaller than Croydon, and maybe others - (haven't time to check).
I did check however that Crystal Palace is in Bromley not Croydon.
