I notice that Ted Heath was a Burnley fan from that wiki page, I didn't know that thought he was invited to open the BL stand because Bob Lord was a "con" servative supporter.
Can anyone confirm please?

Why do they say the 'official' capacity is 500 lower when we've got over 21,700 on this season anyway?

Re: Capacities of each stand at Turf Moor?
I believe any club is allowed around 5% grace with the capacity, although I'm not sure why they couldn't say the capacity is 15,000 if they like. It's up to the owners what they want to sell I suppose.
At Turf Moor we have some small sections that they don't sell unless a game sells out well in advance, such as City or Chelsea etc. NL1 nearest the Cricket Field, for example, is normally closed and used for players families.
So the capacity is 21,401, but for an odd game we've sold 21,700+. Take Chelsea for instance; the 'sold out' signs went up on the website about 10 days before the game, but then they announced it on Twitter as sold out only a few days before the game as they must have opened up another section I presume?

Re: Capacities of each stand at Turf Moor?
Judging by those figures we could gain an extra 5000 seats by demolishing the Bob Lord stand and building another JH in its place.
Loosing out on 3000 seats whilst the work is being done wouldn't be the end of the world.
Add in some bar / restaurant franchises / corporate facilities and other additional income streams.

Firstly adding 5,000 seats would be a massive disaster, as the song goes "Your ground's too big for you" couldn't be more apt, especially is we return to the lower leagues at some stage.Sutton-Claret wrote:Judging by those figures we could gain an extra 5000 seats by demolishing the Bob Lord stand and building another JH in its place.

Secondly if i had an unlimited amount of cash i would throw some of it at knocking down the two monstrosities that were built in the mid 90's, they are awful and their acoustics are the main reason there has been a clamour to put fans in the CFS in the first place.

Re: Capacities of each stand at Turf Moor?
On planet Goody where money is no option.
1. Knock down the Longside and CFS and build a curved single tiered stand which would be about the same height as the current CFS, these two stands would realign with the Bee Hole End and so would the pitch, my intention would be to move away supporters back to the corner of the ground where they were prior to redvelopment, this would mean policing any game would be far simpler for the police and mean home supporters could be behind both goals. The intention of this stand is basic (but decent) facilities and excellent acoustics, they could also be designed with safe standing in mind for a later date. Capacity 11,500-12,000
2. Replace the BLS completely and incorporate dressing rooms below pitch level, all seats in this stand would be premium and would cost slightly more than the rest of the ground, they would have the leg room and sightlines expected from a main stand, it would have high quality corporate areas and in the Premier League would fund itself. Capacity 4,000-5,000
All the stands would have no supporting pillars which would already improve the ground, we must have at least 3,000 seats currently with some kind of restricted view, also any new stands should have the front rows well above pitch level, which isn't the case on the JH and JM, the front rows are an awful viewing experience.
Final capacity we realistically need is about 23,000, anything more could see more empty seats than fans in the Championship as is the case at Bolton, Blackburn, Preston and Blackpool to name a few.
Cost 6 Gazillion pounds.

Re: Capacities of each stand at Turf Moor?
At the moment I would say we are too big for the ground - another 5000 seats would be relatively easy to fill in my opinion. SInce I've started taking the kids to games over the last 3 years I've struggled to get into the Family stand (JMU) - not a chance this season and you've got to be pretty on the ball when tickets are released to get 4 together - avoiding certain areas which are deemed unsuitable for children.
How many times have we sold out this season - our average must be around 95% capacity this season. Next season more.
Anybody who says we shouldn't build in more seats in case we end up in League 1 needs to have a word with themselves.

Spend some brass to replace the roofs on the Longside and Jimmy Mac.
Keep the weather out and the noise in.

Who said League One?
In the Championship we generally average between 11,000-13,000, i presume you think we are going to stay in the Premier League forever?
I think you'd be suprised how many times we have sold out, it's not as many as you think, it's okay against Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea but there have been lots of seats against the lesser teams.
Home crowds this season.

Hi ClaretforeverClaretforever wrote:Any particular reason for asking, Tonbridge?
I just asked because Wikipedia says 21,800, Football Ground Guide says 22,546, The Stadium Guide says 22,619 and I've heard several other guesses on here, just wondered which one was correct? I wanted to know the capacity of each individual stand because the Bob Lord and CFS look small against the JM and JH.
Also,it's interesting how many people don't want the stadium size increased. I personally don't have a strong view on this but we would still sellout 25,000 against the big clubs.

I'd still love to see the CFS safe standing, with that all important acoustic roof.

Quite foolish of you to put these figures up because now we can expect nearly 22,000 Lincoln fans turning up on Saturday.

Re: Capacities of each stand at Turf Moor?
I think he has a point, if you want to take the kids on in the family stand then there aren't many seats available, 5000 extra maybe a bit much but if we extended the bob lord by 3000 with a new roof and no supporting pillars then those 7/8 games that do sell out would sell even more.Goody1975 wrote:Who said League One?

Re: Capacities of each stand at Turf Moor?
Economically there has to be a balance between rarity value, which ensures that people will buy a season ticket to be sure to get to see the big games and having the space for new fans to be able to get tickets. Right now I think the balance is probably fine but if we start selling all of our games out and getting bigger crowds for cup games then maybe we need to start thinking about a slight increase in capacity.
I know if would be unpopular with a lot of fans in the James Hargreaves upper BUT if we were to expand the ground the only thing that I can see being cost effective and minimal in terms of disruption would be to do like Liverpool and Man City and build a second tier on the Bob Lord incorporating additional hospitality and perhaps a disabled section and only take the roof off the existing Bob Lord once the new section and roof are in place. The Liverpool CEO said stadium expansion without corporate hospitality isn't viable, it takes more than a generation for a stand to pay for itself without corporate so that would have to play a big part and of course we've no choice but to conform to the disabled spaces rules sooner or later.
If safe standing is given the go ahead i'd like to see the lower tiers of the two Linpave stands and the CFS equiped with rail seats.

Re: Capacities of each stand at Turf Moor?
Heath was making a visit to the Burnley area as Prime Minister and Lord, who was trying to get himself on the honours list, invited him to the ground during his visit which he accepted. That was in November 1973 I think when the new Brunshaw Road Stand was being built and Lord invited him to return to officially open it which he did in the 1974/75 season for the Leeds game. By then he was leader of the opposition and about to lose the leadership of the Tory party to Thatcher.South West Claret. wrote:I notice that Ted Heath was a Burnley fan from that wiki page, I didn't know that thought he was invited to open the BL stand because Bob Lord was a "con" servative supporter.

Re: Capacities of each stand at Turf Moor?
This is the largest stand at Leicester Tigers and holds around 10,000. This is what I wished Burnley had done where the James Hargreaves Longside is now, although not necessarily as big - unless of course the Bee Hole End was made a bit smaller and that was a stand out part of the ground. The roof seems to sloped slightly downwards, and is able to do that because of how the structure is supported from the sides and the top, rather than our design which almost forces a high, back sloping roof.
The stand is very enclose too, so keeps the noise inside the stadium, and because it's single tier the noise travels really well, compared to those stands we have.
It doesn't go back as far as it looks in this picture either. I think the camera angle makes it look like it goes back further.

Up close it looks really good. Nice single tier, and the noise is amazing when they get going I'm told. When you think that the initial plans for the Bob Lord were for an 8,000 seater stand, until relegation, economic downturn and lack of funds caused us to downsize our ideas, I wouldn't be surprised if the intitial concept looked more like this....with wooden seats of course.

Just a temporary contractor's building whilst work was going on with the recent stand. It's the shape it is because of the road behind.Bin Ont Turf wrote:And what's the green building at one end, their bread bin?
