cricketfieldclarets - amazing to think that 23 seasons later we and 5 other teams in that division are playing in the Premier League.

Ourselves, Hull City, Swansea City, West Bromwich Albion, Stoke City and AFC Bournemouth were 1/4 of the 3rd division (or had it been renamed the 2nd division?)

13 climbers, 4 non movers, 7 fallers including 2 no longer in the football league. Must have been a fairly tough year.

Agreed. Crazy.

I was reading about the City 5-1 drubbing last night. I remember that game and that season well. The championship clubs of that season are even more remarkable which shows how lucky we are in many respects. Only 5 teams other from that league havent played below that level since.

Portsmouth - League two
Coventry - bottom of league one
Grimsby - League two (bottom half) via non league
Crewe - League two (bottom half)
Gillingham - League one (bottom half) via league two
Stockport County - Conference north!!!
Bradford City - League one via league two
Sheff United - League one
Wimbledon - non existent!!!
Millwall - League one

I read that with the voice of Smashy & Nicey...almost like a chart show breakdown there.

Excellent thread and I have always believed to appreciate winning you need to learn how to lose and boy have we fans of many years done so! Carrying on the "journey" theme that my children said and now grandchildren say "are we there yet"? I think we are very close.

I was thinking Gray Mee Keane and Ward there jd, yes we have a much greater strength in depth but we would be a significantly lesser side without their presence. Possibly the greatest strength of the side is its balance yes we don't have wingers who can beat defenders or a craftsman who can weave spells but we as a side are as strong on the left as the right which is unusual and makes us very compact. At times it's frustrating watching skilled players like Boyd being used as journeymen but the players have bought into the system and whilst they do and sacrifice something of their individualism for the greater good all will be well.

Can't argue with that.
