IF (and a big one at that) this stat from the gazette on teeside is true - then we are already spending £45m+ on wages - figures here are weekly spend on wages

Watford - £1.55m
Swansea - £1.41m
Middlesbrough - £1.22m
Hull City - £1.22m
Bournemouth £1.10m
Burnley - £954,000

source is dodgy I know but indicates while we are low in comparison to our rivals many think we are having a much more determined go at it and much closer than ever before at this level

If the annual spend is anywhere near accurate our lads are doing quite well; as we must have the smallest squad in the division.
