First FA Cup final you can remember seeing, TV or live
This question was posed to SD and Vokesy on Clarets Player.
Mine was (on TV) Forest v Luton in 1959. Forest won 2-1 with one of the scorers Roy Dwight, Elton John's uncle. I was eight that year and probably getting into football properly as my first Burnley game was v Everton at the Turf later in 1959. I remember watching all the finals until well into the Eighties, since when it's only been the odd one.
Only seen one live final... v Spurs of course in 1962

The Charlie George Cup final of 1971 when he won Arsenal the league and cup double.

Chelsea v Leeds in 1970, I was 7 and allowed to stay up and watch the replay .... many years later, David Ellery rewatched the whole game, and was asked to give cards according to the modern interpretations, I think it was 11 yellows and 5 reds...

Re: First FA Cup final you can remember seeing, TV or live
Very vague memory of the 58 Cup Final between Bolton and Man Utd. and actually think I saw Man Utd's semi final that year V Fulham which I think they won 5-3. It was played on an afternoon in midweek and live on TV. I was barely 6 years old but a strange atmosphere seemed to surround the games and of course I realised when I was a bit older that this was all connected to the tragic Munich disaster a couple of months earlier. Definitely watched the 59 final and all the ones after it until the late 90's when I actually lost interest in it. I could probably name the finalists and many of the line ups till the 90's but now I don't know which teams have played in the years this century. Hopefully might show more interest this year.

Everton 0 WBA 1 in 1968. First game I ever watched in colour on TV, at a mate's house.

nil all for 1st 3 minutes
then 1-1 for 1 minute
so Clarets were behind for 86mins of the game billed as the final of the century!

Remember seeing Everton v WBA on black and white TV in '68 and Jeff Astle scoring. Remember being fully engaged with the 1970 Leeds/Chelsea games in a much more full-on way though...all agog at Ian Hutchison's "windmill arms" long throws.

I recall that the League Cup Final a year earlier had been played on a quagmire due to Wembley being used for the Horse Of The Year Show. Just wondering if it happened again in 1970. The replay at Old Trafford was definitely X rated. Two thuggish teams involved.Athletico mtoto wrote:Leeds v Chelsea 1970 final.played on what looked like a council pitch.

1958 Bolton v Man Utd. Practically all neutrals wanted United to win because of Munich but perversely I wanted Bolton. Lofthouse scored both goals, the second by bundling the ball, with Harry Gregg attached to it, into the back of the net. Not a cat in hell's chance of it being allowed today.

1953 Matthews final, Blackpool v Bolton on my auntie Polly's TV.
Why it is called the Matthews final when Mortenson scored a hat trick in a 4-3 scoreline is another question.

I remember your namesake being a right pest against Roverrs in the 1960 final. Scored two of Wolves' goals and proved himself a right dirty b*stard for a winger. David Whelan broke his leg in a challenge with Deeley.normandeeley wrote:1958 Bolton v Man Utd. Practically all neutrals wanted United to win because of Munich but perversely I wanted Bolton. Re: First FA Cup final you can remember seeing, TV or live
Horse of the year Show, was held there for four years, I think, between 1968 & 1971, but certainly in 1970, not until late July. The 1970 Cup final was played on 11th April, and the pitch deemed so bad, that the replay was at Old Trafford...I recall that the League Cup Final a year earlier had been played on a quagmire due to Wembley being used for the Horse Of The Year Show. Just wondering if it happened again in 1970. The replay at Old Trafford was definitely X rated. Two thuggish teams involved.
Wembley was still hosting Stock Car racing and Speedway then so I wonder if that had an effect. It seems astonishing now, but the France v Uruguay group game in the 1966 World Cup was held at the old White City, because Wembley wouldn't move the Greyhound racing....

1966 when Everton came from 2-0 down to beat Sheffield Wednesday 3-2. Gerry Young let the ball slip under his foot and Derek Temple picked up the ball and scored the winning goal.

Only had two non-claret footie heroes as a kid - Tom Finney and after 7 May 1960, Norman Deeley. Rovers generously contributed to the Wolves' goals scored column when Mick McGrath shoved one into his own net.longsidetrumpet wrote:I remember your namesake being a right pest against Roverrs in the 1960 final. One of the best cup finals. I remember Temple picking up the ball and striding to the edge of the box and cracking the ball into the far corner. Having just scored the winning goal after being two down he calmly turned and jogged back towards the centre spot - no knee sliding or pulling his shirt over his head. .Firthy wrote:1966 when Everton came from 2-0 down to beat Sheffield Wednesday 3-2. Re: First FA Cup final you can remember seeing, TV or live
Some tasty 3-2's back in a time when the cup seemed a lot more.
Arsenal vs Man Unt in 1979, Incredible finish with Alan Sunderlands goal, how crap was Gary Bailey.
Cov beating Spurs with Houghtons diving header.
And of course "Spurs are on their way to Wembley" bit of Chas and Dave with all the hype being around Ardilles, but it was Ricky Villa who stole the show.

1986 Liverpool 3 - 1 Everton
Was 9 at the time and being a half-scouse (don't judge) had relatives there supporting both sides.
Lineker put Everton ahead before a 2 from Rush and a Johnstone goal

I was at that game. My mate's dad was Joe Brown and he had 2 spare tickets, so me and Pete Clare went on the bus to Chorlton Street and walked to Old Trafford. It was a great game to watch live but pretty fierce.Athletico mtoto wrote:Stalbansclaret

We favoured Chelsea, as we were with their fans on the Stretford End and thought the after match celebrations fantastic, until we got chased all the way back to the bus station by the Leeds fans. I was only a kid but they gave me a bit of a pasting, even though they argued about it first as I wasn't a Cockney. So they decided to do me cos I wasn't from Leeds. The black eye looked good at school the day after though!
The 70's were great!

no that was left for the Toffee fan who ran on the pitch (following the equaliser) and undid his braces to avoid being caught by the Bobby!

Re: First FA Cup final you can remember seeing, TV or live
1956/7 for me- on TV at my grans. Villa 2 v Man U 1. McParland hammering the Man U keeper (Wood) very early whilst he was catching a ball then ManU playing with 10 until he came back on in an outfield position late in the game.
The year after, also at gran's - Bolton 2-Man U 0. Again saw the Man U keeper hammered into the net by "The Lion of Vienna" - resulting in a goal. This time it was the post-Munich Harry Greg on the receiving end.
Not much protection for keepers in those days & certainly no Man U friendly refereeing!
Forest v Luton 1958/9 was the first I saw on our own TV. Bought just a few weeks before the final in time to invite a few neighbours round to watch in glorious black and white.
I've never been live to an FA Cup final, my dad wouldn't let me go to our final v Spurs, I was gutted at the time but much later realised he would've just wanted a deserved "boys' weekend" away with his mates.

1962, on my gran's old telly. A game where Jimmy Robson's goal would have won the cup had Spurs not fluked 3!
Amazingly, my dear old gran had strange pale blue and magenta "colour-cards" which you could fit over the screen, so I watched Burnley in something like claret!

It was my first cup final and also the first game of football I saw that enthralled me from start to finish. I'd been to a few Burnley games before but the appeal was little more than spending an afternoon with my Dad until that point.
