3G surface
Watching the Sutton/Arsenal game. Never played on the 3g. I assume it's a lot different from the plastic pitches of old. Is it that different from a good grass surface? At times it looks like they are playing with a beach ball on that artificial grass green grocers used to have. Has anyone on here have experience ?

Re: 3G surface
It feels different to grass but pretty sure a pro footballer should be able to adapt to it after 15 minutes.
Re: 3G surface
It does play very differently IMO and not for the better. They also seem to vary, the best I have played on is at Worthing FC. Some are really nasty though, and sliding tackles still hurt!

Re: 3G surface
I prefer 4G Over the pitches up Towneley and Prairie, in winter at least. They are far better than what Preston used to play on.
A proper grass pitch in good nick is far better though.

Re: 3G surface
Are 3g/4g similar to the astroturf that was at Towneley High? I certainly got my fair share of burns tackling on there!

Better quality than thatFactualFrank wrote:Are 3g/4g similar to the astroturf that was at Towneley High? I certainly got my fair share of burns tackling on there!

Ever played on the old gravel pitch at Colne sports centre? Still got the scar. Late challenge, lots of PAIN.

It's artificial grass - with LOADSSSS of bits of TINY rubber pieces all over it to give it a little more movement.FactualFrank wrote:Are 3g/4g similar to the astroturf that was at Towneley High? I certainly got my fair share of burns tackling on there!
Decent enough to play on and I prefer it to a naff quality grass pitch.

None are as good as St Teds 'All Weather'!
We trained on there every week as 10 year olds.

Re: 3G surface
Played on many of the latest 3G pitches over the last 4years and think it is only matter of time when all 1st class football will be played on them.
Far superior to grass in my opinion, plays like a billiard table and far better for the joints/limbs.
Sliding tackles? Yes there is still an issue with them but again only a matter of time before that gets sorted.. anyway how many STs do we see these days.
No comparison with the old pitches of the 70s.

Re: 3G surface
That was original AstroTurf, or the kind of "plastic pitch" you saw at Preston NE, QPR, Oldham and Luton. I think they call those 1G or 2G now, depending on wherpther they have a sand infill.FactualFrank wrote:Are 3g/4g similar to the astroturf that was at Towneley High? From what I've read 4G (or above) doesn't actually exist and is just a sales tactic by different companies to say that their surface is better. They are just different versions of 3G. I think the FA have actually stated this too? The 3G has a pile height so looks a bit like grass, but it's never going to truly act like grass as they're built on hard bases, unlike soil.
They're a lot better than they were in the 1980's and 90's anyway.
Re: 3G surface
I have played on both 5 a side and 11 a side 3G pitches.
Miles better than astroturf. It annoys me when pundits start banging on about these pitches like they are astroturf. Totally different. If you play football on the deck they are perfect. The ball doesn't bounce like it used to on astroturf as well

Re: 3G surface
A prediction: a 3G pitch on the Turf in about 5 years along with all other teams in the football leagues.
