Re: Some sad news to report
Sincere condolences KRBFC from all who played for Redrose and Belvedere cricket teams. Dick was an extremely popular figure in the local cricket scene for many, many years. Always had a tale to tell, always smiling and a damn good umpire too. Will be sadly missed.

Great post TonyClaretTony wrote:I am so saddened at Dick's passing. I'd known him for over 40 years since he umpired in local cricket. One day I got a few runs (so that day will be easily traceable) and he saw my name in the scorebook. "Which one is Scholes?" he asked. When I told him it was me he asked if I knew a Frank or Edmund Scholes. They were my uncle and dad and Dick had been brought up with them and was a friend.
I got to know him so well over the years. Eventually I didn't live too far from him and saw him countless times and had chats about football and cricket as well as family. He used to love to tell the story of when he played in goal on the Turf for Burnley Schoolboys against Bolton Schoolboys, how they played well but lost heavily due to a Bolton centre forward by the name of Nathaniel Lofthouse. There's a lovely story to that too, they kept in touch right up to Nat's passing a few years ago.
He used to go out every day after his morning exercises which, he claimed, kept him active. Some days it was just a matter of catching the bus from the Spar on Manchester Road and going into town to put a bet on. But he was an active man who even once appeared on television. He's on Football Hardest Away Days, you can see him leaving Deepdale after the 1-0 defeat. He'd have been 81 then.
Sadly, I haven't seen Dick since I popped round to see him on his 90th birthday. It's two days before mine and he laughed that it made him just two days older than me.
KRBFC - you were privileged to have such a great granddad and I know just how much you and your family are going to miss him.
Rest in peace Dick - I am so pleased I knew you.

I'm really sorry I couldn't be there yesterday but had a medical appointment which I couldn't change. Amazingly the person I was seeing also knew Dick and we chatted about him.KRBFC wrote:The service was today, a cracking turn out.

I am so pleased he got a good turn out yesterday. How's Betty doing KRBFC? It will be a big shock to her after over 70 years of marriage.

Re: Some sad news to report
My sincere condolences KRBFC. Terribly sad news.
Football fades into insignificance in death, but I hope it offers some comfort when I say I'm sure we all feel as if we've lost a family member.
We are all Clarets after all.

Here's the card from the service, a great picture on it, in the bookies

A shame they got his DoB wrong.

Re: Some sad news to report
Didn't recognise him at first. Used to seeing him in a white coat, quite often raising his finger
. I was batting once and the bowler launched a rapid short delivery in my direction. I wisely took evasive action and let it fly through to the keeper. At the end of the over, Dick said if he'd bowled that at me, they would still be chasing it down the hill in front of Towneley Hall. Ah but remember i am a wicket keeper batting at 10, not 1 and with no helmet. Though no Tom Cruise, i didn't fancy a nose job if i had missed it or top edged it. Had a good laugh with him, going back almost 30 years. Funny what you remember.

Re: Some sad news to report
My condolences, just reading the posts in this thread show what a great guy he was. I sometimes think to myself how great it would have been for my granddad to have lived 20 years longer, alas he passed before our recent climb to success. Great to know that Dick saw us through the dark times and rise to where we are again.
Even more respect for someone who lived through the second war and from the looks of it, played a vital role in the air force!
RIP Dick
