Copenhagen and Malmo

Will be visiting these two next month (and of course a little fishing village in Sweden named Trelleborgs).

Anyone been to any or all? Any specific recommendations? Any district better to stay in in Copenhagen or further afield in Denmark?

My son lives in Odense, if you get that far call in at the Kick Off sports bar, you`ll see the BFC shirt, scarves and flags hanging up. If your in a car you can travel up from Malmoa to Helsingborg and then the ferry across to Helsingor and back down to Copenhagen, not a bad day trip. Don`t forget your wallet and make sure it`s full, you`ll need it. Have a good trip.

Have you watched The Bridge? Set in Copenhagen and Malmo

Nyhavn is very popular for restaurants, bars and boat trips.

Church of our saviour is a good visit. You can walk to the top by a staircase which goes up through the spire then winds its way around the outside of it. Great views of Copenhagen from the top. http://m.visitcopenhagen.com/copenhagen ... -gdk410659" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Watched Burnley in a Irish bar in the centre of Copenhagen. Can't remember it's name but probably easy to find.

My wife's family are also from Odense...........my 19 year old son a claret season ticket holder since 4 yrs old supports Denmark as his national team. Which sports bar is that in town?
I would recommend taking in Tivoli but it only reopens in April
I always find Copenhagen relatively cheap if you avoid the obvious restaraunts and bars, wonderful city, wonderful country.......if I knew now how England was going to become 24 years ago our choice of home would have been very different, mind you we only chose England then because I refused to give up my season ticket

The former meatpacking district is great for food and microbreweries in the evening - great BBQ style food and Beer!

I lived in the Nyhavn district for a year. Great place to stay. Failing that stay on or next to Stroget to be really central - kinda like staying on Oxford Street in London. Or next to Tivoli - home of the carousel made famous in the 3rd Man movie. The rides won't be open in March (they tend to open at Easter), but the gardens are worth the visit. The Little Mermaid is a must see tourist thing, but it doen't live up to its billing. And then there's the Carlsberg Museum - beer is only a part of it.

Enjoy though it's not cheap

Nobody has mentioned it so I'll say Christiania - if only on the way to or from somewhere. Also, if you can, rent a bicycle to get around. It's very safe there, and will make you more mobile.

I actually go in April so hopefully a few more things will have opened by then.

The Irish bar is The Globe. I emailed beforehand to make sure the Burnley game was on. If Man Utd are playing you might get relegated to a small screen though!

Denmark has one of the highest standards of living in the world, Copenhagen is a lovely city and if you do cycle the bike lanes over there are usually the width of a car lane and have a curb to give a physical barrier from the cars.

Another vote for Copenhagen's Meatpacking district....the big craft ale and BBQ food bar there is called Warpigs and is stuffed with hipsters supping to a soundtrack of subdued-volume death metal. Was there in November and my mate commented that it was somewhere designed to allow the comfortable, affluent Danes they had been to somewhere "edgy" when, in fact, it's as 100% safe as everywhere else in the city. Well worth a visit though.
Can't remember the name of it but just across the road there is a street bar run by a fan of St Pauli and full of their memorabilia. The only pub in Northern Europe where people still smoke indoors I reckon.

FAO Wilsdenclaret the bar is called `KIck Off` it`s on Overgade, Fleming the landlord is a brill guy, for a Liverpool fan anyway but worth a visit especially Saturdays, wall to wall footy

NRC sorry to be pedantic but Tivoli Gardens had nothing to do with The Third Man.

That film was located in Vienna and featured Prater Park big wheel

I'd highly recommended the Norrebro area in Copenhagen. Lots of cool bars and places to eat. A little bit more off the beaten track.

My mother was born in Frederikshavn, Denmark, and I lived there in the summer of 1980. A lot has changed since then. People used to ride back and forth on the ferries on the weekend in order to get cheap beer and play the slot machines that weren't allowed in Denmark or Sweden. The Danes hate the Swedes, mostly because they're drunk when they get off the ferry, and tend to walk in the middle of the road. My oldest cousin is a nurse in Vejle (pronounced Vi-la), and that's much closer than Frederikshavn to Kobenhavn (Danish spelling), but still on Jutland (Jylland). Visit a Jysk store for the bargains, and visit the Allan Simonsen museum in Vejle (his home town). You can do almost anything you want in Copenhagen. Just don't spit on the street, or carry a gun. Both are serious offences. I would recommend the Napoleon Pub. I got "lucky" there once. Tivoli is closed at this time of the year. Too bad. Really, really worth a visit. Go up to "Hamlet's Castle" (Helsingborg), and visit Holger dansk. Also, Louisiana is an excellent art gallery, on the way. Get a transit pass, and go where you want on the s-tog (suburban train), but, most of all, just enjoy the Danish people. They're always looking to have a good time.

I once played rugby against a team from Trelleborg. It's not a small fishing village, but a sizeable town. Sweden was playing Holland in qualifying for the rugby world cup, so they chose a neutral site. Swedes are very reserved, compared to the Danes. You still can't buy a legal drink in many rural parts of Sweden. Denmark's party capital city is actually Aalborg (where my grandfather was born). It has more bars per capita than anywhere in Europe (even the Mumbles Mile). My cousin's son is a police dispatcher there, so if you go there, you might meet him personally. Just ask the cop arresting you if he knows Henrik Larsen. I'm sure he'll oblige.

The rugby club I played for was called CSR (Christiana School Rugby). I donated a sweater from my club, the Oshawa Vikings, to their trophy case. It should still be there. If you look them up, say "Hilsener" to them for me.

Grapidian, It's not Barmy Beach, but Balmy Beach. They're one of the top clubs in Ontario, because they're attached to a sports club located in a very affluent part of Toronto called "The Beaches". I've given blood to the Beach on numerous occasions. I played for the Oshawa Vikings. Oshawa was the centre for General Motors in Canada until most of the jobs packed up and left for Mexico. It's still there, but in a much more diminished form. We could never recruit the right "type" of rugby player, mostly the "let's party" type, rather than the private school, calculating type (which the Beach had in droves). Still, we do have our own clubhouse now, so if you're ever over this way again, let me know. You won't have to buy a drink.

Malmo is the "escape point" from Sweden. If you know your Danish history, you know that it was the last part of Sweden owned by the Danes. They kept losing it, piece by piece. The Swedes actually invaded Denmark once, and captured the entire country, except for a small chunk near Viborg. The Danes actually fought back from this position to reclaim the country. Hence, the hatred between the two countries. I forget how many wars they fought between each other. Five all-out wars, and four lesser conflicts. In one of the "lesser conflicts", the Danish king, Christian IV, lost an eye in a naval engagement. The Swedes attacked Denmark by crossing across the frozen Sound. (Obviously, before global warming. Could never be done today.)

First part of Danish grammar that you have to learn, "n" and "t" words. There are two "tenses" in Danish, common and neutral. (Don't ask.) The common, or "n" tense, means that the definitive pronoun (the) is added ONTO the word. Hence, borg-en. If it was a neutral tense word, it would be borget. An indoor museum is a museum, while an outdoor one is a museut. Very confusing. Also, "the winter" is vinteren, while "the winter's" is "vintrene". More confusion. The indefite pronoun, "a" or "an", goes BEFORE the noun, hence, A house, et hus, and THE house, huset, House being a neutral tense word. 90% of words are common, the rest neutral. Don't ask why. They just are. 50 (the number) is hav-tres (half 30), while 90 is hav-femts(half 50, if 50 were 50). Again, don't ask. It just is. Eit, to, tre, feje, femts,sex, so, octe, ni, ti, is how you count to ten. Tit is also a legitimate word in Danish, as is fart. (Fart means fare, as in paying your bus-fart). There is a large town called Middlefart (where else would it come from?), and Aarhus, the biggest city on Jutland, is pronounced something like whorehouse.

Rather dull fact alert, I did my dissertation on Swedish hegemony in the Baltic.

Danes didn't really reclaim it from the losing position, they had effectively lost, but the coalition against the Swedes forced them to give it back.
