Grays movement

Post by cricketfieldclarets » Sat Feb 25, 2017 6:05 pm

Think gray gets unnecesary stick for being caught offside a lot. I watched his movement today and he made a lot of good moves but the midfield held on to it a split second too long.

With Defour back soon I think that will coincide with an upturn in goals from Gray.

Some of his and Barnes' offsides were pretty poor today. Opportunity to look right across the line and both were guilty on a number of occasions.

A well timed ball will of course help but this wasn't the issue every time today by any means.

Tool a real touch for the chance he should have buried.

OP is spot on. Half the time he's running in circles because we've held the ball too long. He had the beating of hulls carthorse centre half, we just didn't play him in.

Agree with OP and Quoon. One occasion in particular that Barnes messed around before releasing him and the chance was gone.

The barnes one was very frustrating.

I think with Brady when he is up to speed and more creativity from Defour he will thrive. He was on shoulder and made some very good runs. Just cut a frustrated figure at times. Caused their defence issues with his pace and energy.

Maybe SD will agree after the sending off.

Anyway, glaring miss, and another game without a goal aside, glad he played well.

Also thought Gray had good game today although should have put that chance away. Some more composure from his teammates in the final third would have seen him have a few more chances.

Any forward survives on quality delivery. Both forwards are having to deal with sky high balls before they have it under control. The odd through ball from Barton was good today but we have to get the midfield to make those quality passes on the floor. I thought both the forwards worked hard today. I like Barnes, he gets stuck in, just like the old days, the trouble is those days are gone.

He should have buried the chance that Westwood gave him in the second half, or at least got it on target.

Yet again we held onto it too long. At least twice Hendrick dwelled on it while Gray was eager for it.

I think a lot of our fans, not all, are quick to grief Andre. As you said he works damn hard running those channels and he feeds off very very limited and quite often poor service.

His movement was very good, however, his touch (at times), vision and ability to move the ball quicker was pretty awful.

Our final ball was mostly terrible though.

Grays excellent and all the idiots who criticize him will see just how good he is when he leaves us to join a team capable of providing him service other than backwards passing and long balls. Its an absolute shambles to leave strikers so isolated so much.

Offside is a game of give and take, either one wrong and it's a whistle and free kick to the opposition, got to keep practicing as its supposed to make perfect (I wish)

You mean a team with better players.

He'll still have his back to goal, have to control the ball in tight situations and look to where his team mates are in any other team in this division.

i dont believe our lack of ability with the ball is because of our player quality. The team Coyle had cost peanuts with no star players we could still pass a ball.

You can't have seen much of us if you think we can't pass a ball or have any ability with it.

The amount of times you hear (or see) Dyche on the touchline screaming 'pass it', 'switch it' and 'move the ball' doesn't lend itself to your opinion.

Generally thought he did ok today, no doubt he was let down a couple of times when he could have been played in.

However, there were a few occasions when he had the ball control of a pub player. Really does let him down in crucial moments.

Quite a few passes to Gray were held back because he will do naff all with the ball when he gets it.

His control consists of a back heel or a ten yard trap.

Gray is without doubt our weak link in the team.

good point cricketfields, be intersting to see how he'd play in a team that could supply him a lot quicker. We are bad at playing killer balls at speed. Always too ponderous and sluggish. Gray hasn't a hope in hell of displaying his talents regularly. Must be frustrating for him. Doesnt help that our crossing is usually leaden footed and inaccurate. Lowton despite the claims of much improved, has a look up, picks out a target, then dutifully boots it over everyones head and out for a throw in.

I don't think Gray wants crosses. He wants ball to feet and have the opportunity to turn and run the goal. We're crap down the wings yet also can't really feed him through the centre. What other option is there? :-D

agreed FactualFrank, I'm not suggesting Gray does want a cross, just that when we need that aspect of our game to be of value, whoever gets in the box, we are woeful.

Thought he had a great 1st half, but then the defence kept pushing him out wide. Probably been a better idea for him to force O'Shea to make him, rather then Sunderlands quickest defender.

2nd half, he couldn't be arsed to make the runs and take the chances.

When I loo at the chances we are wasting every game it's becoming frustrating. We need a real poacher again, a Austin, a Payton etc etc

Austin and Payton were class because of the number of chances they got as much as anything. Theyd struggle to get ten between them in a side the creates as little as us.

I think we both know what that means. So it's surely a case of there not being enough midfielders than can provide it.

Aye second half... ball to Gray's feet (Arfield in acres of space on the right).... heavy touch..... loses it.

I'm not for one to single out players to have a go at them, but this 'it's all about the service' is wearing a little thin.

We don't create a lot, that's correct, but in this division you sometimes have to help yourself.

I like Andre but we'll never be able to hand everything on a plate for him in this division.

I don't think he wants ball to feet , that's his weakness! Defoe want's ball to feet.

Gray wants "slide it through 5 yards ahead of me so I can beat them for pace and strength"
