Favourite Saturday activities when you were a boy.
(Or girl for that matter). Just remembering Saturdays when I was a boy back in the 1970's and wondered what others enjoyed doing. Early to rise and race with my brother to get to the front door to pick up our copy of Tiger and Scorcher (Billy's Boots and Nipper Lawrence and Johnny Cougar etc). Into town and up to the Record Exchange and pick up a pack of vinyl 45's (ex juke box with the centres cut out). Home for lunch with mum serving up the exotic new fangled Vesta Curry and rice in a packet. Walk down to the Turf taking a short cut through Burnley Wood and Fullege to pick up a quarter of Everton mints at a small corner shop off Todmorden Road. Onto the top angle of the Beehole End to take our position leaning on the green crush barriers above the main walkway. After the match a rush to get prime position outside the players entrance off Brunshaw Road and autograph books at the ready for both home and away players in the days when they weren't shielded away from the public who paid their wages back then. Home for a bit of tea but usually another race to collect a copy of the Sports Pink which generally was in our local newsagents by 5:45pm. After poring over the days results and reports it was a full league programme of Subbuteo football with a pal before heading off to the Rose and Crown chippy for a fish and chip supper. A quick detour on the way home to startle diners at Rosehill House with a loud knock and run on the restaurant window before careering out of the grounds and off home to catch Match of the Day. We didnt have to worry about being on last on Match of the Day. In those days (thanks to Bob Lord) we were rarely on at all. He thought that TV got football on the cheap. How right he was compared to today's colossal coverage fees. Anyway that's the end of the summary of my happy Saturdays I wondered if others have similar memories and what they are? UTC

That reference to the Pink reminded me of one of what I thought was one of its printers in Nelson - I suppose it could have been a distributor's or something like that. If we couldn't get the away results from the telly shop windows, we'd race round, poke our heads in the back door and ask, "How did Burnley go on?" He invariably answered, "Like they do most weeks, in claret and blue..."
Funny bugger. To be fair, he did let us have a quick look at a copy. "The Victor" was my comic of choice before I got into the super-heroes via the dodgy comic/girlie mag shop in Nelson Market near the old library.

Saturdays were just bliss as a kid.
Used to get my spending money and down to the shop to get Tiger & Scorcher or Roy of the Rovers....and if I was particularly flush Whizzer and Chips aswell !!
Then from the age of maybe 9 years old to 18 years played football almost every Saturday morning at 10am during school term.
Afternoons were spent either watching Burnley or listening to radio / watching Dicky Davies on ITV.....followed by watching the wrestling which my mum and dad always watched then across the road to the "top" shop to get the Sports Pink.
Then Saturday evening TV - generation game etc and rounded of with Match of the Day.
Life was pretty simple back then eh !!

The crazy thing is, when the MOTD theme tune comes on, it STILL reminds me of thinking, "I have to get up at 6 am tomorrow morning to do my paper round."
It's over 20 years since I did that!

Re: Favourite Saturday activities when you were a boy.
I had a paper round so could take my time and read all the comics for free.
Unless there was a game on because we set off early, 77 miles including Blubberhouses, was no fun and we had a sit down pie/chips&peas in town. It was 2.5 hours back then, our kid does the same journey in under 2 hours now.

Re: Favourite Saturday activities when you were a boy.
Not necessarily all on the same day:
Going downtown early with mam,dad, sister - black pudding treat on the open market (outside the old market hall);
Odeon for the flicks ("We come along, on Saturday morning, greeting everybody with a SMILE etc", Flash Gordon, Cisco Kid, peashooting at the girls);
Playing footy with mates, 2 captains, pick sides, pullover goalposts, 10-up/ 5 change ends, bottles of water to sustain the energy levels;
Walking down to TM for a match - 1st team or Reserves, getting the half-times on the alphanumeric boards;
Listening to the footy results on the wireless - tv later
Subbuteo with mates in the evening
Sleeping like a log

First of all; playing schoolboy standard football which was simply the best. Then (out of season)Saturday morning cinema for kids, including Zorro (weekly episode). As soon as possible playing Saturday afternoon sport...any sport on offer.
Sundays were sh!te until we got into the youth league (football, of course)

Re: Favourite Saturday activities when you were a boy.
When I was very young, we used to walk down to the shop, get a can of drink and a bit of chocolate and then watch TV, usually UFO, an old TV series.
When I was a bit older, we'd go play footy in Victoria park, Rhyl, or go hang around the arcades / fun fair on the prom.
There was also a dirt bike course we used to mess around on, on our BMX's.
One lads wheel came off once whilst he was mid jump
Did the other usual stuff kids do in a seaside town.

Re: Favourite Saturday activities when you were a boy.
Saturday morning radio laid in bed listening to Tony Blackburn and Arnold the dog. Without fail Puff The Magic Dragon would be requested every week.
Make my way downstairs to the TV to watch Swap Shop with Noel,Cheggars and Maggie Philbin whilst eating my Golden Nuggets.
Then off up to the woodfield terrace park behind the snowball in brierfield for a few rounds of cuppies pretending to be your heroes ranging from Hamilton, kindon.James.cassidy and dobbo.
Back for 'dinner' which was 'made' by dad as mum was at work so usually oxtail soup with buttered bread from Salters bakery.
If Burnley were at home it was off to the match with dad and meet my uncle and cousins before taking our seats in the CFS.
If we were away it was watching the reserves. 2pm kick off if my memory serves so they didn't have to switch on the floodlights.
Remember watching Kazmia Deyna who got all sorts of stick about his wife????which was difficult for a 9 year old to comprehend. Also remember Alan curbishley playing a blinder for Birmingham, definitely several classes above the central league and of course supersub David fairclough for Liverpool.
The highlight of the reserves was the end of the match when the half times came through from where Burnley were playing.
After the game it was home for tea and play footy on brierfield health centre car park (floodlit) then home for Doctor Who picking up a sports Pink from the newsagents on colne road near Connelly's fish and chip shop on the way.
TV was brilliant as I was allowed to stay up for MOTD and before that was The Professionals.
Supper must be eaten before MOTD as it was an immediate despatch to bed as soon as it finished.
I never saw Burnley on MOTD so you can understand the excitement of my era when were on in that first season in the prem 2009..
Bed and read 'The Pink' studying league tables under the covers by torchlight until I dropped off.

Re: Favourite Saturday activities when you were a boy.
Paper round first up for Fred Mitchell ex- Bacup wicketkeepers newsagents in Ramsbottom. Home for breakfast. Watch some tv, Swap shop. Then get ready for football. If at home we'd meet down Rammy Park about 10. After the game, home for a bath, change and wait for my lift to the Turf if Clarets at home. Lunch would be one of those boiled type burger things they use to sell under the bee hole at the top of the steps!! After the game arrive back in Rammy about 5:30pm to be dropped off back at Fred's newsagents to await the Sports Pink that would arrive just after 6pm. Then wander home studying the tables and results. Then after tea, Generation game, the Professinals or something similar. Finishing with match of the day. Only two games were shown back then.
The above seems about right, memory not what it use to be!!

I quite enjoyed the biology lessons I had with my (older) girlfriend at the time. Ahh, such happy memories.
