Palace of Treason by Jason Matthews. Spy novel set in the present day about Russian and American foreign agents. Good read but a bit of a slog.

Re: What book are you reading?
I'm reading 'Among The Lowest Of The Dead' by David Von Drehle.
It's about the Capital Punishment system in America. Obviously non-fiction but reads like a dramatic novel and gives a great insight into this particular aspect of the American legal system.
Excellent journalism.

Yeah man, electric's back on now. That cephalon thing is something to do with the dorsal exoskeleton of a trilobite.conyoviejo wrote:Is it a cellphone ? Oo er Bad light stopped play in B/wick.. Do they have electric now ?
I wonder what trilobite lightly fried in garlic butter would taste like, actually I think they'd be a tough little nut to get into, would probably have to pound it with something heavy to get the molten butter inside.
Re: What book are you reading?
Of course, you've only just started it lol. A friend of mine says it's good. I found the film The Kite Runner was a good adaption of the book, very true to the storyline and with a false beard that Python's Life of Brian team would be proud of.Imploding Turtle wrote:I don't know yet, but it came highly recommended. Re: What book are you reading?
I'm torn between watching The Kite Runner or reading it first. I should have bought the book by now and read it but I haven't cosmic an idiot. I have a shitty habit of watching films that I should have first read. The one that immediately comes to mind is The Perks of Being a Wallflower. The movie is a masterpiece but I still wish I'd read the book first.morpheus2 wrote:Of course, you've only just started it lol. A friend of mine says it's good. Re: What book are you reading?
Just finished "The Shock of the Fall" which despite numerous awards was a bit meh. Now reading "Dodgers" by Bill Beverley which is recommended (allegedly, according to the cover) by Donald Ray Pollock who is simply brilliant so on the strength of that.....
(Slightly o/t: Best book I've read in the past 5 years. A toss up between "The Devil All the Time" by the aforementioned Pollock and "Stoner" by John Williams. Both very different and both superb)

Re: What book are you reading?
I can't say I've ever watched a film and then read the book afterwards, although I do have The Pianist and Schindler's Arc waiting in the wings to be perused having already seen the film adaptions.Imploding Turtle wrote:I'm torn between watching The Kite Runner or reading it first. The Reader on the 6:27. Enjoying it so far. Very well written.
Kite Runner and a Thousand splendid Suns, very enjoyable. As was the book thief. The members of the family old enough to read a book, have read it. Heroes by John Pilger and Shake Hands with the Devil by LT. GEN. Romeo Dallaire, both excellent IMVHO.

The Heroes - Joe Abercrombie
On my 5th read through of his First Law series before I read his short stories anthology that I just picked up now it's out in paperback. Great fantasy books, if anyone's a fan of the A Song of Ice & Fire books then I highly recommend Abercrombie's books.

'Gone Tomorrow' by Lee Child
Over the years I've read every one of Lee Child books in the 'Jack Reacher' series and I'm now in the process of re-reading them all again. I thought they'd have lost something the second time through and even though I can remember the ending of most of them before I get to the last page, it's not spoiling the read. If you have never read a Reacher book, try 'Bad Luck and Trouble' it's brilliant!

Reading about the House of Caesar is rather like non-fiction merged with horror fiction!
Engrossing and fascinating, and so many parallels with modern day USA!
