Obligatory response to remind people of the foolishness of holding a private citizen to the same standard as a nation state for reasons that...forget it. Hopeless endeavour, trying to help you see the sense in things.

Certainly not. Almost as bad as the House of Lords wanting 3 million Europeans to stay post Brexit even if we have to take our own citizens back from Europe.Anyone thought where x-million Brits are going to stay.
We cannot even house, educate, care for the folk already here.
Before I get slated I would hate to think we would have to ask Europeans to leave because Germany refuses to agree to the present status quo re us there and them here

I can't imagine any circumstances under which Germany would refuse. In fact if they can attract / retain a lot of our young talent, scientists, engineers, etc. etc., whilst retaining their own, they'll be delighted.mdd2 wrote: Before I get slated I would hate to think we would have to ask Europeans to leave because Germany refuses to agree to the present status quo re us there and them here
They also know that we can't afford to send home our EU nationals, so whichever way you look at it, the government's "spat" with the Lords is just stupid.
Firstly it's morally outrageous to use humans as a bargaining tool in a negotiation, but secondly there is no desire on either side for this to happen. (Even government ministers have said that it will be agreed early in negotiations, so their current stance is illogical).

The desire to be so Brexitty so that no one could possibly claim they are not being Brexitty enough is turning perfectly sensible politicians into sounding like they are on their way to the Nuremburg rally.
Does anyone really think (apart from those who follow UKIP, le Pen etc) that this won't be sorted in five minutes when we get around to it?

What I find most interesting (and worrying) about this, is that it could indeed be agreed in 5 minutes, but there will then be a further 2 years of negotiating.Lancasterclaret wrote:This

Mrs May has come out with the totally bizarre statement that No deal is better than a bad deal. But what would this mean for EU workers here, Brits in Europe, and our borders; and where would NO deal leave everybody?? People generally seem to have allowed her to get away with this NO deal stance up to now, but it needs scrutinizing.

Re: Please sign the petition!
I think Ringo's point is that there are certain high profile people in the arts who feel the need to tell the nation what it should do. And there are plenty. Michael Sheen's a good actor but I'd rather he carry on acting than try to represent the downtrodden Welsh working class from whence he came, and so would they.I partly blame Bob Geldof (a reasonable singer) and Emma Thompson (a great actor/comedian) for pushing the Brexit vote over the line.
People hate being told what to do and think by others who are unqualified to do so and who have disappeared up their own backsides. We live near a (well to do) family who constantly shout about inequality in sport, the environment, stupid voters, meat-eaters, etc etc etc. But it's the normal family down the road; footy fans, one Tory, one Labour, one Remain, one Brexit (I bet some of you wrongly assume which is which) that has taken in two homeless people.
I think that's the point.

I think its just political grandstanding.
Only the terminally thick, the ones who still think its 1942 and those who think we can just patrol the channel with the navy to stop anything nasty getting in think "No deal" is worth even considering.
Even an "abysmal deal" will be better than "no deal".

Its what celebrities do, its certainly not worth worrying about it, especially most (if not all) of them do a lot of good work for the causes they feel passionately about.
For example, Gary Lineker pays all his taxes in this country, while the Daily Mail does not.

I agree they shouldn't be worth worrying about. Re: Please sign the petition!
No, because we've left.
"No deal" would essentially be (this is my reading of it) WTO rules on all types of trade, and I haven't a clue about travel, immigration and everything else.
"No deal" would be a disaster, and the only other realistic option is that court case in Dublin in which people are arguing that you can decide to pull out of triggering Article 50 at anytime means we'd stay in the EU.
That wouldn't solve anything though, as we've voted to leave (unless massive change of opinion, particularly in England) so its back to whatever deal we get being better than "No deal".

If the 50,000 idiots who signed it agreed to do the same thing then it would have far more affect.

Re: Please sign the petition!
All 27 countries have to agree and I'm afraid history tells you that you can never be certain.
I do agree with you Lancaster that the Union is likely to agree with the present status quo and I also agree that the present lack of clarity is a worry to those who are working here and even more worrying to those who are here and not working. I think it is disappointing that Merkel et al didn't sign up to this as soon as May suggested it.
You can stick me where you like although even 1942 is a tad early.
Try pre Maastricht and Lisbon which is where it all started to go wrong

But hang on, this is the undemocratic EU we are talking about? All having to agree? Surely its just a tool of German expansion plans for Europe?
Being serious for a minute though, what do EU countries get out of not agreeing to it?

WTO aint that bad a deal. Given the devaluation in the £ most of our goods would be cheaper than pre Brexit £ value even taking into account the WTO tariffs.
A bad deal is where we would be worse off than no deal, by definition surely?

Once Article 50 is triggered, we will be out of the EU in 2 years time (unless the EU states agree to extend this). So if we have no deal at the end of those 2 years, we will be out, and in the absolute worst possible circumstances. It will be a disaster for this country.nil_desperandum wrote:But surely "no deal" -(by definition) -means we stay as we are and our relationship with the EU remains unchanged? Again, load do, but its just the ones who comment about stuff that needs commenting about that get it in the neck from people who would prefer to keep that sort of thing quiet.
Not aimed at you btw, or anyone on this thread, but I suppose its like Comic Relief, its very, very, very hard to sit through the serious bits and not feel the need to do something. If you are a celebrity, then you can do something more to help.
