Technical coach
Technical coach
Out of interest, and it's something I've thought about for a while now, but do we employ a technical coach at the club?
We're utter gash at keeping the ball. Even if it's just to slow a game down and take the sting out of it.
Not sure how many that is now, but it's another defeat with a late goal. From those that went today, did there appear to be any tactical change or instruction to keep the ball towards the end, slow it down, disrupt play or time waste etc?

Re: Technical coach
How many clubs do?
Of our coaching team, 2 of them were midfielders, one amongst the most cultured of his generation.

Re: Technical coach
I assumed, maybe wrongly, that most PL clubs would employ a technical coach.
While it's quite clearly a tactical design to play the longer ball and second ball, I can't believe how poor we are at keeping possession, for a supposed PL team.

Re: Technical coach
Yep. Woan was certainly cultured. He had other shortcomings as i recall though - pace, directness. Funnily enough i am not sure he'd get in a Dyche team. But he was a lovely technician.
Re: Technical coach
He was a decent player with a nice left foot.
"amongst the most cultured of his generation" is a bit silly though...IMHO

Each to their own. I think the original point still stands, though

Re: Technical coach
We can't keep it. and give it away cheaply
Midfield today was shocking technically disjointed no creativity passing going wayward
Swansea gave us a lesson on how to cross a ball break at will play through us with neat football.
We need to address those areas of our game especially seeing games out we invite pressure on ourselves we are technically naive and have seen it happen time and time again

Surely all our players work on ball skills and technique on a regular basis?

I'm curious to know how many other clubs employ a technical coach.

Re: Technical coach
I'm pretty sure that controlling a ball and passing to a team mate will be commonplace in daily training sessions.

Can't see the need for another coach. It's more to do with how our manager chooses to set up and play.

Re: Technical coach
You'd struggle to prove it on most of our away performances. The ease and regularity with which we put ourselves under pressure by squandering possession would be hilarious if it were some other team doing it. Seeing as it's us, it's painful.boatshed bill wrote:Surely all our players work on ball skills and technique on a regular basis?
If you're looking for pace and precision in a Burnley away performance you'd better hope someone's brought a dictionary along.

I've seen tanks turn quicker than most of Burnley's players.

Re: Technical coach
Boyd played the worst pass I've seen all season today when we were in a promising attacking position with Brady stood in acres of space on the left flank. I'm pretty sure we had an extra man and it should have led to a goalscoring opportunity. Boyd played what should have been a simple 25 yard pass straight into touch missing his target by a good 10 yards. Brady looked at him as if to say 'WTF dude'.
Re: Technical coach
Just a basic ball skills coach would suffice right now.

Re: Technical coach
KSR, these players have been working on this since they were apprentices. There is another reason for their lack of ball retention. Obvious.ksrclaret wrote:Just a basic ball skills coach would suffice right now.

Re: Technical coach
You're the one who said obvious about their lack of ball retention.
If it was that obvious then the coaches for England would be able to work it out for the national team too.

Sidney, what I mean is that there is another reason. apart from technical skills, why our players don't keep the ball well, that is obvious.Sidney1st wrote:You're the one who said obvious about their lack of ball retention.

Our players have come through approximately the same system as every other UK based pro footballer. We are not necessarily less skillful than any other team

Re: Technical coach
Good thread, which goes some way to explaining why we struggle to compete away at the top level.
Any team, with the financial resources that are available to us now, are as technically proficient as the manager's preference. There's a school of thought that Jimmy Mac at his best wouldn't be guaranteed a place in the team, basically because he wouldn't track back or work hard enough. But this is where we are with Sean Dyche and probably always will be, he found the successful formula of promoting a team twice from the Championship (with foundations built very much in his own image - as a centre half).
Occasionally he'd let go of the leash and allow players like Boyd -yes, even Boyd- to express themselves (MK Dons away comes to mind) but just as quickly reverts to type and a system within which he is most comfortable. With the success that has brought him at Burnley who can question his methods but I think it's fair to say it's rarely pleasing to the eye away from Turf Moor. To progress though, he'll soon have to move towards a team that might be built around the creativity of Defour and JBG as opposed to the workrate and graft of Boyd and Arfield.

Re: Technical coach
We just need a more flexible mindset, and a little lateral thinking, some proactive tactics and we'll be heading for the top 6.

Imagine if we had players who could keep the ball better, we could be a midtable PL team.
