If we put a giant mirror 10 light years away from Earth and looked at it through a telescope, theoretically we'd see 20 years into the past.

In the light of all the diesel car bashing that's going on at the moment, how about this fact for some perspective? According to science writer and environmental consultant Fred Pearce, the world's 16 largest ships pump more carbon and sulphur particulates into the atmosphere in a year than all of the world's cars put together (800 million plus). The ships burn bunker fuel, the cheapest and dirtiest fuel in the world.

Hi MofK, I guess you know that new rules are being implemented 1-Jan-2020 by International Maritime Organisation (IMO) that cuts the sulphur limit to 0.5% from current limit of 3.5%. There are also current rules on bunker fuel quality in coastal waters that since 2015 limit sulphur to 0.1%.Man of Kent wrote:In the light of all the diesel car bashing that's going on at the moment, how about this fact for some perspective? Three possible remedies for ships: (1) install scrubbers to remove sulphur from exhaust gases; (2) switch to marine diesel (middle distillate rather than residual fuel oil; (3) switch to LNG (natural gas) fuel.
Refineries have already invested significantly to have capacity to produce enough of the new fuel standard.

No you wouldn't because it wasn't there 20 years ago so you couldn't look at it.FactualFrank wrote:If we put a giant mirror 10 light years away from Earth and looked at it through a telescope, theoretically we'd see 20 years into the past.
You mean "and looked from earth at the place where the giant mirror had been left" We also have to assume, presumably, that the "we" wasn't meant to include us, literally). In that case, the note doesn't indicate that you had returned to earth. This would hence be like saying that if you had a cr4p in Blackburn and then got your telescope out to look at it, that the turd would be somewhere other than where gravity left it - which wouldn't be 20 miles away let alone 20 years (or 10 years x 2), or that you had somehow magically been teleported back home again on impact.
Note, this isn't quite the same as saying that if you visit Blackburn, it's like finding yourself back in the 1990's. In one respect that isn't true either of course, as they were in the premier league 20 years ago.

But it'll take 20 years to get the image. So you put the mirror there and in 20 years time you'll be seeing the current present.timshorts wrote:No you wouldn't because it wasn't there 20 years ago so you couldn't look at it.

Oil and energy sector - which provides the fuel for the ships and fuel for our cars and lots more besides.Man of Kent wrote:All sounds good PW. Roll on that date! Sounds like you work in shipping or pollution control - thanks for the solid feedback.
And, yes, the sector is also the source of a lot of pollution...

Re: Sunday Random Facts
What looks like the elephant's front knees are actually its wrists. There's a popular internet factoid which states that the elephant is the only animal which has four knees. But it doesn't; it has two knees at the back, and elbows and wrists at the front, exactly like other quadrupeds. Elephants, horses, dogs and all other quadruped mammals have two knees and two elbows. Almost all mammals have basically the same skeletal structure because we are descended from common ancestors.Dejavu wrote:The elephant is the only animal on Earth that has 4 knees.
What you can see in the middle of a horse's front leg gets called the knee but is actually its wrist – a knee joins the femur (thighbone) and the tibia (shinbone) whereas a wrist joins the radius (forearm) and the carpus (the bit the digits are joined to). The bit between its body and the middle of the leg is the forearm. What we think of as the 'lower leg' is analogous to our third metacarpal - the bone linking our wrist to our middle finger. Horses walk around on the equivalent of their middle fingers.
There's a misconception that birds' knees bend in the wrong direction but it's just the same as with any other animal. Birds' legs look like they're backwards because we're actually looking at their ankles. Birds' knees are right by their bodies and normally covered by feathers, and their ankles are well off the ground. Their knees bend exactly like ours do.
