BEWARE! Fake talktalk scam email

Post by RingoMcCartney » Mon Mar 06, 2017 1:46 pm

Just to let anybody with a talktalk account I've received what looks like a genuine email saying there's been a problem with billing and mobile service will be terminated. To update details immediately.

Fortunately my phone wouldn't input the details.

I've been in touch with talktalk and they haven't sent the email. It's a definite scam email

Never use the links in an email from a utility provider and you'll be fine, at least in terms of email phishing. Any bill that needs paying can be found through directly going to their website and logging in to you account.

Yes, it's obvious, but people are lazy.

Not only fake e-mails. I got a call purporting to be Talk Talk informing me that they had noticed my system had problems, running slow, which they needed to fix.

The call sounded wrong, the women from India I could hardly understand and when I said I wasn't happy and needed more official proof the line went dead.

The BBC are now reporting this is happening with Talk Talk on an industrial organised scale.

One of the joys of outsourcing the call centres around the world, it's hard to know what's an official call and what isn't sometimes.

I don't need Sky to tell me when I'm having issues, I'm straight on the phone to them.

I've had a couple of emails recently pretending to be PayPal. One of them saying they would lock me out of my account if I didn't sign in and update personal details, and another - which actually seemed quite genuine at first glance - saying I had purchased a stereo system from an e Bay seller - it even listed the item and gave all the recommended other items below, just like the real website

Fort anyone who gets a PayPal one, in case you're interested, you can forward the email directly to spoof@e bay.co.uk (no need to write anything just send it)

They even send out phishing emails that include your name now too. I've had two.

Some are blatantly obviously fakes, some are scarily close to the genuine article. Ignore everything, but if you are nosey and can't resist, NEVER click on the link provided to 'update'. Like I say, ignore everything, stay secure.

Not had that but it is quite scary that they get your details so easily

Loads of them about at the moment, if you are using Gmail it is refusing to fetch them off the server so that is handy and I have just had one today off Amazon, looked real but luckily I am pretty savvy in that respect, don't trust them.

Wouldn't open a genuine email from that company. The worst company I have ever dealt with bar none. I wouldn't have anything from them if it was free.

Had a call this afternoon from a lady saying there was a fault with my BT internet connection and it was going to be shut down.
Rubbish was my reply and put the phone down.
I'm with Virgin Media.

I've had the Amazon and the PayPal one. I don't even have a PayPal account.

Another one I got was HMRC saying that they owed me money.
