Bargains in Europe.

Post by Darnhill Claret » Tue Mar 07, 2017 5:37 pm

Just seen a lovely goal, about 40 minutes ago, scored for NK Maribor (Slovenia) by Zahovic. Quality strike from a player who created some extra space and time with a good piece of skill which will go straight onto his compilation dvd.

Looks a relatively young player whose goal was premier quality.

If anyone has any knowledge of this player please offer your opinion. I only saw the last 10 minutes of the game and the goal was scored in the 85th minute.

We aren't allowed to buy from Europe, abc declared that the club are rubbish at purchasing European players.

Only played 11 top division games so far so may be a little early to get a real feel for how good he may prove to be.

Nice one, get in early at a reasonably cheap price. Certainly wouldn't lose out financially. Wages should be low and I believe a sell-on would profit Maribor and Burnley. Or better still he could become a Burnley legend. If you saw the goal you would understand my enthusiasm especially considering his relative lack of first team experience. Get in there Sean.

Didn't Chris Smalling play a similar number of games for Fulham or the non league team, before ending up at UTD?

Yes Fulham took a chance early.

Zahovic reminds me a little of Kevin Doyle in stature.

Still many good players on the continent who will demand lesser fees.
Not sure whether ABC will allow me to suggest some more though ;)

Kerem Demirbay of Hoffenheim.

Caught a snippet of the Bundesliga show on ITV4 (?) a couple of weeks back. Looked a lot like Mahrez and scored a wonderful goal.

Quality goal return this season. Might be worth a look.

Signing a player off the back of one spectacular goal is a recipe for disaster. You can't judge a players ability off one goal alone, even Sordell scored a belter for us.

Given our recent signings of Hennings, Vossen and Defour (who doesn't seem to fit the Dyche style of play) ABC may have a point

Wish we could go back to the halcyon days of Remco van der Shafted !!!!!

I think the biggest problem for us in terms bringing in quality players from Europe is keeping it quiet until the deal is done. It seems to be to be more difficult to keep transfer interest under wraps in Europe. As soon as our interest is known it motivates others to get involved and hikes the price outside our means.

There are 60million people in this country, there are 1000s of brilliant footballers, some discarded by clubs as the situation wasn't right. I've plenty of love for Europe but I know there are plenty of brilliant footballers in the uk.

I genuinely believe there are enough players in Lancashire alone that could make a world class team. It's finding them, motivating them, developing them and keeping at it.

There's no doubt we have been improving our network in Europe as stated by the Chairman himself. Bit of a guess on timescale here but sure it was an interview 2 years ago he said we are looking at Europe much more and to strengthen our scouting in this area.

So you'd like to think in the coming summer window and beyond we will sign some very good players. We're already seeing evidence in Defour and although he didn't sign, Grosicki.

Saying that you can probably say we'll also sign someone else who doesn't turn out to be that great. Foreign players can struggle to adapt and it's impossible to be 100% successful with transfers no matter where they're signing from.

Not just foreign signings but Id say for every good signing a club will sign 2/3 bad signings. There's an element of luck involved and lots of other factors.

I think it's fair to say he's out of our league

Watching Luka Zahovic this evening. First half didn't have many touches but was tidy when there was nothing on. made a few runs doen the channels but the passes didn't arrive. Scored a 41st minute penalty to give Maribor a 1-0 half-time lead. Struck it cleanly to the keepers right hand corner, low. keeper went the other way. Zahovic had quite a wait before he could take it. Kept his cool. 2nd half just got under way.
