Fair play to Lincoln

Post by Quickenthetempo » Wed Mar 08, 2017 11:58 am

On hearing that Lincoln had been allocated 9k tickets for their FA Cup game I went on their site to see. It was right and they have sold out. That's some following down to the smoke.

Great effort - hope they have a day out like we did at Chelsea in the cup.

Still one of my best away games.

Only to be expected.. A once in a lifetime opportunity to see Arsene Wenger live rolling on the floor screaming at the ref and fourth official.. Worth every penny..

Didn't we take a similar number to Sheffield United?

Not quite as many. I'm sure we took more when away figures weren't recorded but Wembley apart we haven't in my claret life from 88 onwards.

Old Trafford is the only league ground where the allocation for a cup tie would be greater than the almost 9,000 at Arsenal.

We got the entire Bramall Lane end at Sheff U in 1993 but it would not have been close to that figure I wouldn't have thought.

We also had part of the main stand as well at Sheff Utd.

Plus we had a section in their end which was at the far end on the right hand side.

Out of interest, for away fans is their section segregated?

I'm only asking as I've been in the home end my last two visits to the Emirates.

If it is, how can it be extended to 9k when the ticket allocation for league games is probably about a 3rd of that?

I think all modern stadia allow sections to be segregated off.

I think at Arsenal the 9k is the full lower tier at the normal 'away' end, so segregation isn't an issue.

The urban area seems to be 130,000. I'd imagine that's similar to our borough which is the 87,000 you mention, but that includes Hapton and Padiham etc. Burnley itself is 73,000, so that is a little smaller than 96,000. They do well for their size, as do we.

Not really. They have a pretty big catchment area - Lincolnshire, basically. There's no reason why they should be behind (say) Exeter or Carlisle.

So let's add Colne, Nelson, Accrington, barnoldswick, Ramsbottom, Haslingden, Rawtenstall, and Clitheroe plus a whole host of villages to our catchment area, eh?

I'd say Haslingden, Ramsbottom, Clitheroe are debatable as although I'm sure we have Clarets there, our neighbours have lots there themselves. Good point though as we draw from surrounding areas.

All teams draw from their surrounding areas. Some teams, unlike us, don't have 20 or so teams, so of them the biggest in the World/ Europe, on their doorstep. Like Lincoln, for example.

Lincoln won't draw many from Boston,Grantham and other large Lincolnshire towns which are 30-40 miles away to watch non-league football.

They would if they were Premier League. There's a lot of potential to be the biggest club in Lincolnshire, and if the club or the people of Lincolnshire aren't as successful or as football-mad as we are in this area so the potential isn't realised, that's fine - but the catchment area is there.

This is roughly Lincoln's catchment area, looking at their nearest professional clubs (top 5 divisions which are all professional). Grantham, as someone mentioned above, would be classed as Forest's catchment as it's nearer the City Ground than Sincil Bank.

It's actually a very large area before they hit the midway point between them and another professional club.

Image

The thing with Burnley is that we have Blackburn to one side, or Accy if we're being picky, and to our right beyond Colne and Nelson we have fields until Keighley(I'm generalising of course), which happens to be twice as close to Bradford City than it does to Burnley.

I thought it would have to be otherwise we wouldn't have had the extra allocation at the side? Maybe I'm wrong?

You Burnley people seem to have a strange obsession with population and catchment areas :?

Did you all wanna be Geography teachers instead of Spacemen when you were growing up? :geek:

Bet when you blow all your candles out on your birthday cake you wish for a census

The thread was wishing you well and being impressed by your following, PrincessImp. Like it or not, and I know you're having a bit of fun with the smileys, population and catchment area is important because it gives you your fan base, and potential growth. You have a sizeable area which, on the face of it, is far bigger than Burnley's potential. That doesn't take into account historical ties due to League position of course, and it's purely based upon geography, but it was a fair point raised.

If Lincoln ever got to the Premier League, or Championship even, then they could, and likely SHOULD, get larger crowds than Burnley in a similar situation. We do so we'll because of our history, and in spite of our limitations.

Good luck at Arsenal by the way as all I've seen from Clarets are messages of goodwill. I hope you stuff them!

PrincessImp, Burnley was a top football club long before anybody in Lincoln was even a glint in their great-grandfather's eye. Lincoln City,as a club, are way down the list compared to the Mighty Clarets. Your singular lack of success only underlines the dearth of true football followers in Lincolnshire. Go back to sleep for a hundred years or so and you might be somewhere in our orb.

I don't want to worry anyone, but most of that catchment area of Lincoln is either bog or fields with crops in.

Its flat farmland, populated by fans of every other club you can think of, but not Lincoln!

Their fan base is Rochdale level, and its brilliant what they are doing this year, but lets not get into a silly argument (again) about it.

Going on about fan base sizes btw makes us sound like Leeds fans, and no one wants that surely?

Lancaster, I don't think you read the post properly. Whether it's bog land or not it contains 416,000 people and potential fans of the Imps. I already mentioned about historical ties, but that area is closer to Lincoln than it is to other clubs.

CF, around us, almost everybody supports us.

Around them, almost everybody supports somebody else.

The chances of them averaging 9K for a league season is roughly similar to us winning the European Cup.

I'm sadly old enough to remember playing them in Div 4, they are a nice club, but with a limited base of actual support, certainly nowhere near our level, whatever the local area around them holds.

I never disputed a word you've just written. I actually put in the original what it's based upon. By rights it's their area. Other clubs near to them have been more successful and have eaten into it, but their area is still bigger than ours.

I think you're being very dramatic with that remark about the European Cup. If they were in the Championship, and their ground allowed, they'd be averaging at least 9,000 these days, and possibly more.

How are Grantham Town doing these days? I understand the Iron Lady wasn't much for football, anyways. She did her best to try to kill off the game.

Today is different of course, but crowds are high compared with say the 1970's and 80's. The last time Lincoln spent time in the Second Division, what is now the Championship, they had attendances as high as just under 17,000 ( back end of 1950's to 1960 they had a run in the second tier). I'd say the potential is definitely there to average 9,000+.
