OT Renault Scenic help please
OT Renault Scenic help please
I have a Renault scenic which has an electric hand
Break. ( the lever pull type )
Yesterday it wouldn't work with the alarm sounding and a "parking break fault" message on the dash.
I tried everything to try and release the hand break.
Anyone out there had similar problems or know the solution?
I have pulled the yellow overide lever in the boot, so now I can drive it but have to leave it in gear and can only park on a flat road until it's fixed.
Any help or advice off the petrol heads on here would be greatly appreciated, I don't have a clue about cars.

Cursory search of the net shows the control unit to be the problem. It looks like this unit operates a pair cables to pull the handbrake on (unlike the VW system of actuators on the calipers = expensive)

Re: OT Renault Scenic help please
Could be a few thing.
Rear caliper, or even as simple as needing a new battery.
Not sure if it can be diagnosed by a regular garage, maybe need to go to a dealership, depending on how much cash you can afford to spend on it.
Sid will be your best bet though.
Once you've overwritten the brake in the boot it can only be reset by Renault I think.

Re: OT Renault Scenic help please
As stated, the handbrake will need to be recalibrated using can clip (renault diagnostics)
Plenty of garages will have the software if you want to avoid paying the stealership.

Not particularly, a new one ( not Renault scenic ) is my next purchase.Diesel wrote:Do you like your car?
I bought it purely as it has 7 seats.
I have already had the drivers side real caliper replaced on the last MOT last summer.ClaretAndJew wrote:Could be a few thing.

I didn't think so, in fact, in all the time you've been posting on this board you haven't 'liked' anything. Literally.MACCA wrote:Not particularly, a new one ( not Renault scenic ) is my next purchase.

Re: OT Renault Scenic help please
I'll be honest, I've zero experience of the Renault electronic brakes.
If Paul is still in charge down at Reedley service centre on Lomeshaye it's probably worth giving him a ring.
He's a former Renault Master Tech from what I remember so he may be able to help you out.
*I've looked on his website, he's still the owner

I'm extremely hard to please, I set very high standards.Diesel wrote:I didn't think so, in fact, in all the time you've been posting on this board you haven't 'liked' anything. Literally.
But I do "like" posts/comments, I just choose to acknowledge them in a different manner by addressing or quoting the poster to congratulate them, rather than just press the button
Can you recommend a car, I got rid of my Audi after I got bullied, now the Renault is no good, and I have struggled with only 1 car in the house because of selling the Audi.
What is an acceptable car to buy/drive?

Re: OT Renault Scenic help please
I am looking for new vehicle. 9 seater mini bus type if possible. Seen Vauxhall and for transit types, but wouldn't know the best runners etc.
But yes I'm serious. I'll be wanting a new family car too, but looking at something a bit bigger like a Volvo X60 ( think its X60 ) or BMW X5 but been warned off them.
Like I said useless with cars, but touch wood never really had 1 that's had constant issues yet

Re: OT Renault Scenic help please
Ah ok, so a lot of it is going to be dependent on how it's being used.
If it's mainly town usage/school runs/shopping then don't bother with a diesel, you'll end up killing it due to the DPF clogging up.
Google it if you're not sure what I'm talking about, it's a 'filter' on the exhaust system that needs to be driven for long journey's to help keep it free of 'soot'.
The AA did a good article on it, have a read here - https://www.theaa.com/driving-advice/fu ... te-filters" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
A DPF on an SUV will cost upwards of £500 to replace plus labour and ancillaries.
The new ones on the VAG range will cost upwards of £1k I think due to their system.
Most cars nowadays are purchased purely down to brand preference/habit.
You're better off actually going out and test driving a range of them, seeing what best suits YOU more then listening to anyone else, because you're the one who's got to drive it.
For example I like the Peugeot hatchbacks, but there a lots of people who won't buy them due to the age old excuse of 'dodgy' electrics.
I know people who get all excited about VW/Audi's and proclaim them as the most reliable cars on the market when actually they aren't.
Same with Ford having a bad rep from years ago etc.
Volvo - good solid motors, have become pricer in recent years as they expand into the luxury SUV market - that's the XC range, 60, 90 etc.
BMW - have a good rep, but they do have niggly issues that occur with age like anything else, so they aren't bullet proof.
Land Rover/ Jag have some models out, but they're a lot of money plus the Discovery 4 does have issues and the new model out this year is an unknown quantity at present.
Feel free to ask if you're not sure, I don't mind chatting about cars and I'm more then happy to give out my email address.

Re: OT Renault Scenic help please
Minibus - Vauxhall, Renault and Nissan's are all the same vehicle pretty much, just different badges and interior trim, but they share everything else.
I think they run the Renault engines too, but I'd need to check that.
You know what you're getting with a Ford and Merc, they've been around a while now.

Re: OT Renault Scenic help please
Cheers for that Sidney.
And no word of a lie the wife's just nipped the bank and the warning message isn't coming on and the hand break is working now... very confusing.
That's stumped me.
Still looking for a fresh one in the summer. Needs to be 9 seats minimum, don't mind 12.
Will run the Renault until it breaks as it is used for weekends too at the minute as it's not overly big around town.
I've had A Volvo before and it was bullit proof ( well it seemed so ) and the audi did me 5 years with no issues other than tyres, pads and general wear and tear before selling it.
I'm torn as to what to buy for a family car due to the horror stories of bills going into the thousands. When I'm used to buying 5 year old cars, and them lasting me 5 years with no issues. ( up to now )

Multiple things, but until it stays on or is on at a garage/workshop they'll struggle to find it.

My advice; don't buy French cars because, generally, they are sh!t. Stick with German because, generally, they aren't.

Fisrtly, I wouldn't correlate a Renault Scenic with 'petrol heads'
Secondly, agree with Sidney...those new Volvo XC's are the dogs knacks

Please give me a knock a little while before you're selling it, as I can make plans then , as we would be very interested in it.

Re: OT Renault Scenic help please
I am sure you can. However, speaking from personal experience I've now had 6 German cars, 4 X BMs and 2 X VWs and never had an issue other than consumables. Apart from my new 335D X-drive, all the others have ended up with over 100,000 miles and my wife's 04 E46 320D Touring now has 267,000 with no problems and even the swirl flaps were too tight to undo (at 200,000). We are keeping it until it passes the 300,000 mark and then I'll replace it with a new 330D Touring.Sidney1st wrote:Which German car are you referring too then, because I can provide lots of information that would prove you're wrong.
German reliability is good enough for me whereas French reliability isn't. I've had a Renault 21 which dropped its fuel tank on the road because the mounting brackets rusted through and a Citroen Xantia which stranded me when one of the hydraulic line connections exploded and I lost suspension, then brakes and steering. You pays your money and takes your chance but I'm sticking with German diesels.

It was virtually given to me and I used it as a spare car. Comfortable but sh!t. In the end I offered it to specialist breakers as it had lots of decent spares on it, but no one wanted it so it got scrapped. Never bought French again.

Exactly the same thing has happened to our Citroen C4 Picasso except we can still drive with no alarms etc. I've no advice or solutions though as I'm not a car expert! It's going to the garage next week to suss out the problem. Must be a French thingMACCA wrote:I have a Renault scenic which has an electric hand
