Gifton Williams hat trick
2006 or thereabouts... any recollections of this and Gifton himself... what kind of goals... against Barnsley I think. Were Burnley losing 2-0?

Re: Gifton Williams hat trick
Was that the same game when he ballooned that penalty kick or was that another game.

Re: Gifton Williams hat trick
It was on Tuesday 12 September 2006 and Barnsley went 2-0 up after 32 minutes. Gifton came on in the 34th minute as a replacement for Mahon. Jon Harley scored just before half time to make it 1-2 and then Gifton scored in 57, 83 and 90th minutes so seal a 4-2 win.
Sorry that I can't remember how he scored because I wasn't at the game because of it being a midweek match and I was running my own business and couldn't get down to the Turf.

Re: Gifton Williams hat trick
I spoke to Gifton a couple of months ago and we chatted about both events. He is seriously embarassed about that penalty but was very proud of that hat trick
A really genuine nice bloke . Very quietly spoken

Re: Gifton Williams hat trick
I remember Jensen joining in the celebrations but for some reason thought it was for the last goal
Re: Gifton Williams hat trick
Great wing play for his first, how I miss that sort of goal.
Horrible kiI though!

Why did they all celebrate so much when they were still losing?

Re: Gifton Williams hat trick
Hell of a celebration for that first goal considering we were still losing. Was that our first goal in a while or something!?

Really weirdly I was just talking about this match this morning with some work colleagues when discussing last minute come-back wins and how amazing they feel as a fan. This and the PNE game (4-3 was it?) came up.

No, because as I said in post 5, Jon Harley scored just before half time to make it 1-2 at half time. Gifton's first goal was the equaliser.Shappie wrote:were we not still 2-1 down after the first goal

apologies Ashington. didnt read that!
Re: Gifton Williams hat trick
One of the worst strikers I have ever seen, didn't he have arthiritus and needed injections in his knee before every game? He was worse than Michael Ricketts and that takes some doing.

I was on that match sat next to a very depressed Streeterpingfellow at half time.
I jokingly said to him don't worry Gifton will score a hat trick in the second half. He wasn't amused and for the only time I can recall I made an accurate prediction.

Re: Gifton Williams hat trick
Gifton picked up an injury when he was just 19, playing for Watford against Sunderland. That injury left him suffering from rheumatoid arthritis and it looked, for a while, as if he'd not play again. That he did was incredible, that he did at Championship level for Watford, Stoke and Burnley even more so.KRBFC wrote:One of the worst strikers I have ever seen, didn't he have arthiritus and needed injections in his knee before every game? He was a player with some talent coming through at Watford when it was thought he'd become a future England international. When he was with us, you could see the actual ability he had but sadly that was coupled with an inability to get around the pitch due to his injury problems.

Re: Gifton Williams hat trick
Yes he did really well to sustain a career for so long given his injury record. Having said that he sprinted away at a fair pace when his third goal went in. Don't think I ever saw him move so fast!ClaretTony wrote:Gifton picked up an injury when he was just 19, playing for Watford against Sunderland.
