Re: Result of the night
Exactly. If we moved as far away from Burnley as Wimbledon did to Palace we would be playing in BB5!Paul Waine wrote:Hi cricketfield,
Croydon is only "an hour away from Wimbledon" because London transport is always "choker block." Actually, can be quick tram ride between Wimbledon and Croydon (so long as the tram takes the corners carefully).
Selhurst Park was not too far for most Wimbledon fans - about the same distance many of them will commute to work.
Re your question: how far is too far? It's got to depend where you are. 10 miles in many areas, not to bad. London perfectly acceptable. North East Lancs, not a chance, I would have thought.

Re: Result of the night
The use of the word 'Dons' now I think is all that's really left to resolve.
After that it's just going to be people sitting in corners chewing over what happened grumbling.

Pretty much by the looks of it.
Milton Keynes got a football club.
Wimbledon started afresh and are better off for it in the long term.

Don't forget the shiny new retail park.

Re: Result of the night
Better off in what way? A division lower than they were in 2003? Playing in a stadium that's not even in their borough? Spending the first five years trying to find a site to develop and the last ten years fighting residents, Wandsworth Council and vexatious heritage groups who don't want the greyhound stadium on Plough Lane to be redeveloped? Not having the development finance in place to build more than one side of their proposed new stadium?Sidney1st wrote:Pretty much by the looks of it.

Yeah, it's really been a piece of p!ss for the Wimbledon fans. What the f*** have they got to moan about?

Re: Result of the night
The fans feel more connected to THEIR club for starters, you left that one right off the list I see.
Yes its been a long road for them, but they're probably enjoying watching THEIR team more now then they did during the last few years before the old club moved.
They were a mess in 2003, so re-starting probably wasn't a bad thing if you take the emotion out of it, something a number of you can't seem to do.
As for playing in a stadium not in their borough, they aren't the only club to do that, so don't bother making a big deal out of it.

Re: Result of the night
Genuine question as I don't know a great deal about what happened at the time.
What would have happened to Wimbledon without the MK move?
They didn't have a ground at the time - was there an alternative - could they have continued as the original club?

They probably would've gone through a similar battle to find a permanent home that the new club have been through, possibly not as long though.

Re: Result of the night
they are better off for it. debt free. had some fun getting back up the leagues and had some exposure.
wimbledon didnt want, need or deserve a premier league club thats the sad truth.

Re: Result of the night
Having lived in MK for a number of years and spoken to one or two people supposedly in the know I too can confidently say that everything ClaretTony said about the reason for the move is correct
There's no going back unfortunately so MK will continue as a football club but how they have the gall to keep calling themselves the Dons I'll never know.
All of the trophies and memorabilia from Wimbledon's past are all back with AFC Wimbledon and MK no longer have any connection with Wimbledon just having used the move to get the retail park and make Winkelman a few bob..
And Dons is short for Wimbledon not Milton Keynes so ffs drop the name

That's a very fair point, I admit.Sidney1st wrote:The fans feel more connected to THEIR club for starters, you left that one right off the list I see.
Also a fair point, but not a justification for having their club ripped away from them. And it's only with the benefit of hindsight that this can be said. I doubt that would have washed with their fans in 2003.Sidney1st wrote:Yes its been a long road for them, but they're probably enjoying watching THEIR team more now then they did during the last few years before the old club moved.
If you take the emotion out of football and think about it rationally you end up with 22 men chasing a pig's bladder around a patch of grass. I'll keep the emotion in it, thanks.Sidney1st wrote:They were a mess in 2003, so re-starting probably wasn't a bad thing if you take the emotion out of it, something a number of you can't seem to do.
Okay then. That's me told.Sidney1st wrote:As for playing in a stadium not in their borough, they aren't the only club to do that, so don't bother making a big deal out of it.
