Can you still buy Segs?
Last time I bought any was when I had a pair of brogues, about '79

Is "segs" still a word used for calluses in t'north west?
I agree with posts 2 & 3 though, re metal bits for shoes, most cobblers sell them.
I used to always get the ones for the outside of shoe heels because I wore them down really fast otherwise. Neighbours used to love it when I clomped off to work at 06.25 in the morning.

Reference was made to these things as Blakeys/Blakies in Life on Mars.

Cyclists get segs on their arse but that's the only use I've heard.

My mum used to say that my dad got segs on his arse watching telly.

I think this comment rested somewhere between rustic northern charm and some type of experiment with the use of irony.

Used to fit them to my "Toetector" brogues back in the 70s. Made a lovely clicking sound when you walked.

Not recommended when it's icy out.

They did sound great when out walking but could make the heels of your shoes very slippy.

Horseshoes on the heels and segs on the toe courtesy of Accy Road cobblers.

He must have done a roaring trade in the early seventies as lads were asking for them even on new shoes.

It was a well-worn phrase in our house too, usually muttered through gritted teeth and aimed at my dad when he asked someone to make him a brew while he was reading the paper.

I used it once down here in London and got looked at as if I was a weirdo. Cue five mins of me trying to explain what segs are and then the penny dropping: "Oh, you mean Blakeys."

Lots of lads used to wear a sort of ankle length leather boot - we called them "dealers" - in the late 70s/ early 80s when I was at school and segs were a common attachment. Like someone said above not good when icy but excellent for sliding tackles on tarmac in the school yard!

Clark's in Nelson sell them.

I bought some to protect a pair of leather heeled shoes.
You can hear me coming from 3 blocks away :D

If you wore docs in the late 70s you were hard. If you wore dealers with segs you were off the scale. Available in tan, burgundy and black, zip or elastic sided, plain or brogue 8-)

There used to be a hierarchy to wearing docs, how many holes.
I remember one lad feeling really good about his new 22 hole docs until another showed up in a pair of 26 hole.
