And are we possibly moments away from this becoming an historic day for Burnley Football Club?

Defoe is in it apparently

Deserves it, but not exactly "one for the future"

I'd just started a new thread about Defoe. Hadn't seen this one but have now merged the two.

They just want him to fire them to the World cup, they won't worry about the future too much after that.

19 goals in 55 England games would suggest they shouldn't rely on him too much.

The Sun reckon - Marcus Rashford, Nathan Redmond and James Ward-Prowse are all in the squad due to being left out of the Under 21 squad.

Vardy, Rashford and Defoe as striking options?

Looks like they'll be relying on Defoe afterall.

As for the rest of the squad, it looks very different, fair play to Southgate for that choice.

Luke Shaw. Wow. Maybe I have a chance of England selection, as I've played almost as much football as him recently.

No Jack Wilshere. He must not have been injured for long enough this season.

That's about as bad an England squad as I've ever seen. I'm talking Graham Taylor era.

A possible backbone of Jones, Livermore and Defoe. Dear me. The Ox shouldn't be getting called up, he's not progressed from 2 or 3 years ago. Shaw has hardly played. Forster has been awful this season. Vardy and Rashford had scored about 5 between them this season! Lingard... Jesse bloody Lingard. Really? Wow. Is this the best we can do?!

Indictment of the state of our PL that the team running away with the title has precisely one inclusion (half as many as Burnley!).

Incidentally we can 'boast' the same number as Liverpool and City.....

Also, for the Gray protagonists, two of the three strikers have less PL goals than Andre this season - same could be said in Walcott and Deeney's case though

There's nothing to suggest that squad of players can't bring a trophy home.

Can't see Keane or Heaton getting a game. But would be more than capable in either.

Keane may get a run out second half against Germany.

Isn't it sweet we are slightly disappointed at "only" having 2 players called up to the England squad? Bloody love where our team has come over the last few years :-)

Defoe's one of the few there that deserves it.

Fantastic goodclaret, we have come so so far, but let's hope people remove the claret tinted spectacles.... we only have two players that could realistically be called up. We only have two who are good enough at the moment.

Defoe is a great player
But sadly his time has passed I don't see any reason for him to be playing, we should be building for the future not the past.

True, but sometimes you've just got to go with what you've got. I think Peter Crouch may be waiting for a call if there are any injuries.....

People claim that he should pick players in form and players from lower clubs. He does with both Defoe. Yet people still complain.

Regardless of age Defoe has earnt it.

Let's hope he has an off day on Sunday. I took the **** out of him when we were winning 4-1, loudly from the Bob Lord stand. He heard me. Let's hope he's forgotten or it gets his panties in a twist.

I'm not necessarily a great fan of Walcott but find it incredible that with the dearth of talent available he has been omitted. Southgate has said that he didn't have time to watch him over the weekend as he had to check out other players but he thinks he has a claim for a place. Bizarre!
