No sound on my computer - what should I check?

Post by ClaretTony » Thu Mar 16, 2017 6:34 pm

A couple of weeks ago I asked for advice re: my computer which was really appreciated. I've stored a lot of the info but, amazingly, for now, it has been running a little bit better.

However, a couple of days ago I clicked on a YouTube link on here. It played but there was no sound so checked other things and it is the same result, no sound whatsoever.

I appreciate it could be that my very old speakers have given up the ghost but I'm reluctant to buy any new ones in case that's not the problem. Are there any checks I can do to eliminate anything?

Cracked it - found some old headphones, they work, so it is the speakers.

Thanks vegas.

If you right click on the speaker icon bottom right.
the drop down box should appear click troubleshoot and go through the process you will need to restart your computer once the diagnostics have been done it will tell you when
hope this helps

Go into My Computer > Settings > Sound > Find your speakers > Right Click > Set as Default Communication Device.

Should work - provided its not a hardware problem

I've had similar problems in the past and when I went into speaker properties some settings had changed, not my doing.
I'd have a look in there. Note down what your settings are on now, before you start changing anything. I'd start by looking for anything that has muted.

The thing is, if he tried some headphones in the same port, then I doubt it'll be anything to do with property settings as that's generally regardless of whether it's an amp, speakers, or headphones. It's just the output port. What I'd do next is plug the speakers into something else and see if they work, such as a tv.
