World Derbies
Hello Clarets fans. A collection of us are currently working on a football related project, based on football derbies around the world.
We have received many pictures and stories from fans around the world. Spain, France, Germany, South America and beyond. We have also received stuff from Burnley fans.
We would be interested to share pictures, videos, nostalgia and more about a variety of World Derbies.
How would Burnley fans say that their Derby with Blackburn Rovers stacks up against other more famous derbies? Domestically and Overseas?
Have any of you been to Derbies of clubs not including your own? What was it like as a Neutral?
If any of you have any pictures you would like to share we will happily credit you and get your images some exposure. A few of our pictures are here.
Thanks in advance

Re: World Derbies
Been to many. People say our rivalry with Rovers is underrated. But I dont think it is. Everyone you speak to has heard of it when you mention you are a Burnley fan.
The thing thats killed it for me is the travel arrangements. People cant be bothered with it and that has affected the atmosphere and turnout. When we play middtable games its not seen as that big a deal these days. Thankfully the more recent games have all had something riding on it.
Preston for me is a big rivalry too. Again especially when one or both of us is riding high.
Been to loads abroad. Most intense by far is The Eternal Derby in Serbia.

Re: World Derbies
Any project on football derbies around the world must surely start with the origins of the football league derby, blackburn v Burnley being the world's oldest football league derby would be a good start.
In my opinion, the original and still the best.

If you have any we would love to share them. This part of the project is in its infancy but already a ton of new and old content to add to it.

Re: World Derbies
Nice sentiments. But if they folded it would be a sad time in my book. Like something is missing. We need them as a rival. Imagine being a Stockport, Bolton, Middlesbrough, Brighton, Carlisle with no proper rival.cutsy123 wrote:They arent our derby team amymore..

In fact most succesful clubs all have a proper rival.

Re: World Derbies
Loving the pics on insta - great to see how different fans go about their derbies.
The stadium shots make our derby look very tame - hope one day we're allowed displays such as those abroad in England.

I've been involved in over 40 fights with Blackburn fans and won all of them, 36 by TKO

Graham Sourness said out of all the Derby days he has been part of, the Burnley v Blackburn derby was by far the most ferocious

For people interested in this kind of stuff, the Derby Days videos COPA90 do on YouTube are excellent. Check them out.
Re: World Derbies
I went to the Espanyol v. Barcelona derby in the 1999-2000 season at the Olympic Stadium. I was expecting a cauldron of an atmosphere akin to a Rovers-Burnley match, with 30,000 fans from each team going mad. In the event only about 500 Barca fans showed up. What a set of pussies, the ground was half empty.

Re: World Derbies
I know one of the Fener fans was really unhappy - He snuck in and hid with a flag and a machete in the advertising boards and then stuck flag into centre circle at Gala next game didnt he?

Barca fans in general dont impress me. Went to the noucamp in december and atmosphere from home fans was awful. No surprise really though as its more about entertainment and tourism.Pstotto wrote:I went to the Espanyol v. Barcelona derby in the 1999-2000 season at the Olympic Stadium. Nothing wrong with football tourism as long as the club retains its core support, image and identity.

Re: World Derbies
Like Barca never having a shirt sponsor and being proud of it ..... Then having unicef and donating money to them instead of recieving sponsorship payments.......... That lasted longcricketfieldclarets wrote:Barca fans in general dont impress me. Went to the noucamp in december and atmosphere from home fans was awful. Re: World Derbies
I've seen another world derby, Las Palmas v. Tenerife years ago in their old stadium. I had a tapas in a bar before the match and it made me ill. I had to rush to the toilets and I did the most violent puke of my life, literally spraying the whole of the cubicle wall. The atmosphere was just like an average game but the farce at the end like nothing I'd ever seen before. Las Palmas were winning 2-1 when they started the most ridiculous counter-productive time wasting routine I've ever seen. I think the ref added a further 10 minutes to the match and Tenerife equalized int he final kick of the match.

Haslingden v Rawtenstall for me. Especially for those fans who no longer reside where they were born and brought up. Brutal.
