What route is everyone taking tomorrow? Was due to go on the coach but need to set off later than intended now as my brother is on a late shift and nephew playing football at 10. I seem to remember someone posting ahead of the cup match that some of the route was closed? I went A59 as usual.
Much prefer going that route. An example where the journey is better than the destination - although no doubt residents of Sunderland could say the same about Burnley
Thinking A59 then joining the A1 after Ripon.

No problem with that route depending of course where you are starting from.

Yes that's the route man.
The usual stop off in Tony Blair's Sedgefield for a bit of American arse licking, illegal warfare, mass murder and of course a bevvie or two.

Starting from Burnley. So head towards Colne and via Kelbrook and Earby on to The A59 as usual unless anyone is aware of any issues?
Also loads of free parking a mile from the ground if you are heading in with the ground on your right. Which I did the previous time but took a wrong turn off The A1 for the cup game which was actually quicker.

Sorry just read my mind. There is free parking. Will find the street name now. Although last time they changed it to residents only on match day. so had to park a little bit further out. Only a ten minute walk though.

I would check in the morning but lots of roads getting flooded around here at the moment and the A59 area is bad for it. Rain supposed to carry on through the night.

Thanks thats what I was hoping for. Whilst I take the same route most times I know weather can affect it.
The parking I cant find the street name it is near B And M Bargains though so if you put B&M Home Store, 39-41 The Green, Sunderland SR5 2HJ into Sat Nav it is 5 mins walk from there, away from the ground. Its next to a small boxing club but cant remember the name of it.
Further out you can get park and ride but its easy enough to park for free and get away quickly.

No probem. Don't worry about it. There seems to be plenty usually although like I say last time some signs went up so had to go further back.

Aspinall arms tonight. I know you won't go past it but it's near the A59 and could be like that at any point.

Thanks. Thats the route I took last time when I took the wrong turn at The A1. I actually got there quicker but was baffled when I came in to Sunderland the other way.
The free parking for anyone going that way is between the sainsburys and b and m bargains which are about a mile apart. With B And M being closer to the ground.

Great thanks. I go to Stockton, Newton Aycliffe, Newcastle and Darlington quite a bit so go the A1 out of habit but A19 is probably quicker. Will just need to remember to cut accross that way tomorrow. Do you go as far as Ripon then accross there?

Flood warnings in place:

Across the border too. You might struggle to get there if you leave it too late.

Sadly not going tomorrow but I've been offered a freebie at (nearby) Burton Albion so my route is the Three Horseshoes in Barton under Needwood, the Devonshire in Burton, the Pirelli stadium, back to the the Devonshire and, finally and hopefully, the Three Horseshoes for the second half of the rugby v. the Bogtrotters.
God speed to all the travelling Clarets, you lucky sods, you'll be there for the first away win.

You take the same route as if you were going to the A1. When you get to the A1 you continue on the A168 to Thirsk. You go right past the racecourse and do have to go through the centre of Thirsk but then just follow signs for the A19. You stay on there until signed to come off for the Stadium of Light. Also avoids the potential roadworks on the A1.
On the weather front - no rain forecast all day in the North East.

As you cross the river at Ripon turn right at the roundabout, Dishforth Road, this takes you directly to the A19. Much quicker and avoids Thirsk.

A59 Head to Ripon, on the Ripon bypass you'll come to 2 roundabouts together, at the second one take the 3rd exit towards Ripon race course (course will be on your right as you drive past) follow the road and you'll go over the A1 to a roundabout at the end, take first exit to the Left and follow that road (runs parallel to the A1) at the end there are 2 roundabouts, take 1st exit at the first one and 2nd at the 2nd..... this will lead onto the A19 and you wont have to go through Thirsk.
BEWARE OF SPEEDING ON A19..... LOTS OF POLICE!
Go North and take 2nd set of signs for Sunderland (North of the River) ground is signposted from there.
AVOID A1 DUE TO MILES AND MILES OF ROADWORKS WITH 50MPH CAMERAS

This is one of the routes I use on my regular trips to the Turf and it is probably the best route to Sunderland without doubt. As Barry says, it is easy and it misses Thirsk which can sometimes be a bottleneck. Have a good trip.

Honington to Thetford in the car, train to Newcastle via Peterborough, metro to Sunderland, watch the match, train to metro centre, meet the wife and have some tea, drive home to Edinburgh. Get train back down on Monday for work. Epic......

perfect cheers. always avoid a19 coming home thinking it would be longer. But looks a much better route especially given the never ending 50 zones on a1.

I pretty much always use the a19 when traveling south from the NE. Far better than the a1.

My mate lives close to Stadium of Light and he told me years ago to always use the A19. Absolutely no problems on it this morning and no problems on the way at all despite suggestions of flooding.
Has rained up here this morning but fine now although very cold as you would expect.

Try my post 23, Ash. It just wins it for me.No junction number coming South but it's the last junction before the A1M and follow Ripon.

Thanks minnie, I've done that one too. I've been living and travelling from the NE now for the last 29 years so I just vary my routes depending on the weather. Sometimes even go across the A69 to the M6 or cut across through Alston and over Hartshead which is a great drive on a clear day.
The worst times are Tuesday night matches when both the A1 and A19 can be closed at the same time and that results in a massive detour.
Never mind, I was back in the house today just before 6 o'clock -- really nice change

I did the A1 and yes the roadworks (converting it to motorway) were a pain but i still made it up there in two and a half hours. I parked at South Hylton just off the A19 and got the Metro in. It is the last stop on the line so relatively quiet. Got off at St Peters and a 5 min walk to the ground.
I expected the station to be packed after but most of the home fans seemed to walk it past the station and back into Sunderland over the bridge. Tram was crowded but back at my car and away no probs about 5.30..i considered A19 coming home but stuck with the A1. Back home at 8. I would certainly recommend the Metro.

All this traffic and queues at away games makes me realise how lucky (most of us) are to live within strolling distance of a premier league ground. Balls to driving and public transport after a home game.

Too true, and yet there are many 'fans' who can't even be bothered to stroll along.

You will all be doing the route again in three weeks
