Was watching his performance with John Lennon yesterday. Checked his age on Wiki surprised he was 90 and still alive.

Surreal. But it happens. RIP.

If you speak to or read about most of the Guitar greats of the 1960's through to the 2000's, an unfeasibly large number will tell you they learnt to play by practising " Johnny B Goode " on their first Guitar...

He was a product of his time, nobody wrote the book on being a " Rock and Roll " star, and they made mistakes and alot died young: he survived far longer than most. He was ripped off and exploited like most of his generation ( He was offered either Royalties or a one-off fee for the original recording of Johnny B Goode, fearful of being ripped off, he chose the " Up-front money "...$50 !!! )..

That probably just leaves Fats Domino, Little Richard & Jerry Lee Lewis left from the first wave of Rock and Roll ....

Sad to read this news. A superb and hugely influential musician. RIP Chuck Berry.

Fats Domino, Jerry Lee Lewis and Chubby Checker are all still alive though.

If thats true and it's all you can remember of him fair enough, I'll remember 'Johnny B Goode,' 'You never can tell' Sweet Little 16', Maybellene, 'No particular place to go' 'Rock n Roll Music' and all the other great songs that made the guy a legend in the history of music.

How sad are you that you found it necessary to say something like that of one rock and roll's original, and I mean original greats.

- trust you a blueclaret to chuck in your single sentence of negativity, it wouldn't be a complete thread without your usual offering.

The bloke lived for 90 years.
Like all of us he made mistakes.

- have a look at post 26, and then look this morning at comments made this morning by the Rolling Stones, the Beach Boys, and Bruce Springsteen and try and get a bit of balance.

Back In The USA will always be one of my favourite ever songs

Im not sure what happened in all these years but the electric guitar hasn't ever sounded as good as it did way back then.

Brilliantly musician, one of the all time greats. A lot of music, especially from 50s and 60s, based on his style.

RIP Chuck, long live Rock and Roll.

The real King of Rock and Roll. The songs, the style of play, ideal voice for r'n'r. Songs still being recorded. There are three on Cliff's latest album (Cliff was second wave).

My Chuck favourite - The Promised Land. Brilliant lyric, aspirational story in a song.

He has inspired so many to greatness over the years, whether you like him as an artist really becomes irrelevant. It is safe to say he had a major influence on popular music. RIP a true legend of music.

I started listening to his stuff as teenager in the 70's when it wasn't really fashionable any more and I've listened to it ever since, along with the brilliant Jerry Lee and a host of others. I never saw him live either and I regret that. I'd like to see Jerry lee before he goes the same way, but don't think there's much chance tbh. A shame.

I'd love to see a film about Chuck Berry be made, I've read such a lot of interesting tales about him.
R.I.P.

As for Cliff Richard, I worked on one of his tours in the 70's (sound engineer) and whilst I wasn't a fan before I started I was by the time it ended, he was/is a consummate professional and every one of the session musicians on the tour (who were also at the top of their respective field at the time) all held him in high regard, Cliff sang a lot of RnR numbers during the sound checks, which we all thought should be in the shows.

It was Harry Potts who said to play football with a chuckle in your feet. Chuck Berry played HIS OWN WRITTEN SONGS with a chuckle in his feet (or the equivalent of). When they sent Voyager on it's one-way mission, they included 4 songs, only one of which was rock and roll. Yep, it was Johnny B. Goode (playing guitar like he was ringin' a bell). Go, Johnny, go. And My Ding-a -Ling was definitely his worst song, but, ironically, his most commercially successful.
