Without Marney

Post by cricketfieldclarets » Sun Mar 19, 2017 11:16 am

We have won 5 games in total in the matches in both seasons after he did his ACL.

I thought a quick winger was priority next season but clearly replacing one of our most underrated players, Marney is

Who is out there that can do the job he does? McArthur at Palace? McCarthy at Everton? Stephens?

Massive loss. More than youd imagine.

I think this is less of an issue now with Hendrick, Defour, Barton and Westwood. He was a massively important player for us and we used to struggle without him but any current struggles are because we're crap away from home - we were equally crap away from home with Marney in the side.

Marney has always been a loss when he's not fit and we will certainly need to sign a central midfielder in the summer.

Marney makes our side tick. His work rate is such that the other players seem to feed off him and up their work rate. Big loss.

He's our Kante.

In my opinion, by far our most influential player in recent years.

I've said this before: best all round midfielder at the club.

We probably do miss him. If nothing else, he'd have moved the ball quicker yesterday which we badly missed.

That said, I'm not sure our record away from home with him in the team this season was any better than that without him, and the problems have been roughly the same in the games he has played on the road - a lack of forward intent, a bit too much pondering and not enough speed and incisiveness.

In terms of a replacement - I'm not sure like for like replacements really exist these days, certainly not in England. He's a bit old-school. Presumably Dale Stephens was seen as a potential replacement, but actually I suspect that's exactly what we want to mould Hendrick into - he's a better passer of the ball than Marney, but has similar ability to get around the park and marries it with a bigger presence. What he lacks at the minute is Marney's tenacity, but he's adding that to his game gradually over this season. Give him a Dyche pre-season, and I think we might find we have Marney's long-term replacement under our nose.

Sadly, Dean Marney has probably left our building.
