England's steepest street
Re: England's steepest street
Quickenthetempo I'm lovin it. I'm from the Stockbridge estate, I'd love to see some aerial phtos of Padiham and the surrounds before it changed.. Main Gas etc. and what the field were like before the estate was built, Gawthorpe school etc.
Re: England's steepest street
Not convinced Diesel that yours is steeper than Spion Kop. That Witby pic looks pretty daunting for a cyclist.

Sutherland street in Colne is fun in the snow whilst driving.

Winewall Lane seemed pretty steep as I was skidding down it this morning. Almost shat myself.
When I was a kid we visited a place in Wales called Porth y Nant/Nant Gwrtheyn, and the road down to that was ridiculous. Again, I almost shat myself.

Am I missing something Inchy or can you genuinely not see it's a young girl swinging from the rail, the surprising bit for me is there's snow everywhere and she's got a t-shirt on.

OK. Thanks. I should have known that. For years I thought I was born in Burnley, until I researched the family tree and found I was registered in Nelson !bobinho wrote:Smelly nelly. Nelson.

Re: England's steepest street
. remembers walking up Spion Kop on the way to his grandmothers house as a small boy. She horrified him by telling him that a young boy was killed who was standing on the back of a milk float. The milk float struggled half way up and the boys on the back tried to push it up the hill. Unfortunately it was too heavy and one was crushed under the wheels.
. wonders if any of Padihsm's older residents remember this happening or did his grandmother just not like him?

It's very strange. The girl is dressed for a summer's day.Caballo wrote:Am I missing something Inchy or can you genuinely not see it's a young girl swinging from the rail, the surprising bit for me is there's snow everywhere and she's got a t-shirt on.
Has she been super-imposed onto the original photo? It looks like it. Notice the line of snow on the rail from which she is swinging.
Or is it one of those "ghost" pictures that crop up every now and then? You can almost see through her skirt to the woodwork of the fence. Where are her legs?
The more I look at it the weirder it becomes.

I just presume the printing and photo images weren't as good 60 years ago.spadesclaret wrote:It's very strange. The girl is dressed for a summer's day.

Who needs Robert Doisneau's 'The Kiss' after you've seen 'The Swing?' by 'anon' of Padiham?
Jeremy a friend from the locale told me the similar story that I related earlier, so maybe there's some truth in it.

The rainbow in colour at the top of the picture is pretty weird as well.spadesclaret wrote:It's very strange. The girl is dressed for a summer's day.

Re: England's steepest street
The BBC article says Ordnance survey averaged it out using some complex formula, so it's difficult to compare. Using Strava, the one in Bristol that 'won' only has a maximum incline of 23.5%, so i can only assume it's consistently steep. Also, Strava looks to do some averaging of it's own especially on the smaller streets which make up many of the suggestions. I've banged a few of the above into Strava and the highest incline I've seen is Holker Road, Buxton which hits 27.2%. Old Wyche Road in Malvern (from the article) hits a whopping 39.8% in one place.
Strava won't give an accurate reading for Spion Kop in Padiham, and averages it at 8.3%. Steepest one I've found locally is Newmarket Street in Colne which hits an impressive 24.5%,

checking on Shibden Wall I came across this. For any cyclists the bottom of the list, corkscrew at Bollington shows at 33% but actual peak angle is 45%. Not a street though.

Re: England's steepest street
When is a road not a road? Depends how far you want to go up the garden path. If cobbling a 'way' makes it a road, then the climb up to the big end at Pendle might qualify. There's probably been a mountain biker with low gears who's done it, perhaps the criteria of what constitutes a street is whether it is wide enough for a car to use and with no steps, so that discounts the Pendle cobbles.

Re: England's steepest street
Chester's charming St Mary's Hill is reputedly the steepest cobbled street in England. I can’t find any information about the gradient though.
For anyone visiting Chester and wishing to climb it go to the bottom of Bridge Street and turn right just before the "Bear & Billet" pub. Walk along a small mews and the cobbled street will be to your right.

I don't think the picture with the girl was taken in Winter. It looks like a gloriously sunny day in a slightly over exposed photograph. There is full foliage on the trees and the chimneys aren't smoking. Your's, Frank Columbo.

When we beat Bastards at The Turf I stayed at the Rosehill, top of Manchester Rd. Checked in at breakfast and ambled down for the match and a full day drinking. Walking back was like scaling Everest.

Sorry Dom, just seen your post. At the Rosehill I drunkenly tried to negotiate the steps to the snooker room too, holding a bottle of wine and glass. K2.
