serious question, but is there any chance you have been *ahem* visiting these kind of sites?
The only reason why I say that is that I was recently browsing the internet to find a new toaster, and when I came back to this messageboard, I kept being directed to websites that sell kitchen appliances.

That won't be it. What you're getting is targeted advertising based on your search history. UTC probably use adsense to host adverts and you can prevent certain industries from being among those who receive ad placements on your site.
What the OP will be experiencing is browser hijacking which happens too much on this site.

I bet you're really fed up with all the soap adverts coming your way.

For anyone who is getting this problem, can you please tell us the following:
Were you on the site or the messageboard?
What device are you using?
Were you on the mobile or the desktop style (you can see that at the top right)?
What browser are you using?
What adverts could you see on the UTC page when this happened?
All of this will help us to work out where the problem is coming from.

Just happened again to me
On the message board - opening the Comic Relief thread
IPhone
Mobile style
Safari
Didn't notice the advert as had clicked on my notification so went straight to post but when clicked back it was Dafabet (although that could have changed to that in refresh)

That's really odd. I pulled all of the dafabet ads just after the Sunderland game. We put them in place for a special offer for the match and then they were replaced on the Sunday morning with Amazon.
Can you clear your cache and see if it still happens?

Were you on the site or the messageboard? Messageboard
What device are you using? iPhone 5S
Were you on the mobile or the desktop style (you can see that at the top right)?Desktop (seems to default to that on iPhone)
What browser are you using? Safari
What adverts could you see on the UTC page when this happened? Can't remember to be honest as I don't look at them. It wasn't happening on iPad using the mobile view (default for this device it seems).
All of this will help us to work out where the problem is coming from.

Most of the problems with ads since the start of the site have been with Apple and Safari.
