Comic relief
Anyone else watching?
For the first time ever I donated tonight. Maybe I'm a sucker...
I just hope I don't get bombarded by charity texts for the foreseeable.

Re: Comic relief
Good question
Maybe the juxtaposition of 'comedy' and desperate plights make it all the more stark.

Alan Partridge saying at 8.20 that he gave an amateur boxer a tw*t in the face was a little comicalTheFamilyCat wrote:But have you laughed?

Saw bits of it tonight
Think the "comedy" parts were harder to watch than the "pledge videos" this year

Re: Comic relief
Hate to be cynical and I have donated today but is it just me who feels a tad uneasy at multi millionaire celebrities arsing about on TV to encourage ordinary working people to donate £10 or £20?
Why can't they just pledge 5% or 10% of their own annual earnings. wouldn't that raise more?

I want to point out that you're named after something that is depicted running into walls because there's a tunnel painted on it.

What other means of getting ordinary folks to get off their arses and do something or donate is there ? For those sneering at the celebs, I'd ask what the **** do you do for others ?

Re: Comic relief
Pretty much every year this and children in need tends to break the previous years takings.
Can anyone show me where things have improved when they've spent the money?
Same with Geldof's repeated band aid stuff.
Aid money is poured into the same old places from dozens of different charities and from what I've seen very little actually changes.
Now I'm not saying people shouldn't donate, but isn't it about time questions are asked about what's going on?
If it isn't enough then maybe it's time governments re-evaluted where they send their aid (are China still on the list or India?)

Re: Comic relief
Are you expecting a charity appeal (or government aid, for that matter) to change the politics and economy of the third world? Of course the money raised makes a difference - its just on a much smaller scale. A well here, a vaccination programme there, some education elsewhere. It helps individual people rather than countries.Sidney1st wrote:Pretty much every year this and children in need tends to break the previous years takings.

As for those feeling offended by celebrities - how do you know they haven't put their hands in their pockets too? Donate or don't donate, it's up to you, but sneering at people who are trying to help doesn't come across well.
One exception - Barlow. Feel free to give that tax dodging git both barrels.

You don't have to if you prefer not to. You don't even have to watch it on TV but carping from the sidelines about people who do makes you look the pettiest of knobheads.

I was going to watch it but then I saw that Russell Brand was going to feature. It comes across to me that most of these 'celebs' do it for their own gain and publicity, than do it to raise money.

Re: Comic relief
I donate. I enjoy Comic Relief. Usually. Last night was close to abysmal. The production was poor - why did all the presenters sound like they were speaking to us from the bottom of a well? Shoddy cutting, beige sketches. Beige is polite.
Richard friggin' Osman doing a live TV Twitter vote about biscuits? Drop me out.
I'm not anti-celebrity whatsoever but whole night on this occasion felt obnoxious and self-satisfied.

Fact is that the tens of million of pounds raised is a pittance in the grand scheme of things. While every little helps, this is nowhere near enough to make a real difference. It certainly doesn't sort out the conflict and over-population in poorer countries that is the root cause of many of the problems. It simply makes life a little easier for those who are suffering.

Re: Comic relief
This. Sort of. The bottom line here is that Capitalism, successful as it has been in raising standards for many means there's a huge vested interest in maintaining the status quo - that way big companies continue to make money. There's an excellent Carol Churchill play called "The After Dinner Joke" which is a satire on Charity. Written in 1977 it could have been written yesterday.kaptin1 wrote:Fact is that the tens of million of pounds raised is a pittance in the grand scheme of things. Re: Comic relief
The BBC would be better off calculating how much it will cost to make the programme then just donating that to the charity and then show repeats of George and Mildred, Rising damp, Steptoe and son, Till death us do part etc. At least then the night would have some comedy attached to it.

Re: Comic relief
There are charities out their who won't give hungry Africans etc food but seeds tools and land management help. It works better. Likewise in the UK They give counciling and life skills to people not hand puts. At least comic relief does raise cash and that is all that matters but it would be good if instead of teary eyes celebs hugging a starving baby to camera they just filmed normal aid workers/charities out in the field who help people 24 -7 using the money raised.

Re: Comic relief
I reckon for the next Comic Relief, we should have Holly Willoughby standing fully clothed, and Dawn French standing completely naked. Then, for every 10 Million donated, Holly takes an item off, and Dawn puts one on.

Yeah there's something about him as well which I don't like. Then again, it might be down to the fact that he reminds me of somebody at high school who.. actually, I'll leave that bit out.Saxoman wrote:Didn't watch but if I'd seen anything from coogan I may have destroyed my telly. Complete nob.
