Have we ever had a player captain their national team whilst playing for us before?

Blimey......that's a tester for sure.
Initially thought of Brian Flynn who was capped 33 times for Wales and just possibly as captain on occasions?
Anyway one for certain is Jack Hill, a centre-half at Burnley who filled the big boots of Tommy Boyle when the great man finished. He played seven times for England and just once as captain when they played Wales remarkably at Turf Moor. England lost 1-2 and Hill scored an own goal!

Good to know that he is seen as having the right qualities to be captain. Plenty of leadership throughout our team which is good to see.

Also, if Brady, Hendrick & Ward play, when was the last time we had three players on the same side at once for an international?

Did we ever?
Elder and Irvine both played in the same N.Ireland team in '63 but of course Mac had left us earlier that year, otherwise that would have been three.
Also Flynn and James played in many games together for Wales.
And Miller and Angus just the once for England against Austria in '61.

They did indeed in '80 against Sweden and Portugal and again a couple of times the following year.
Also Connelly and Pointer twice (I think) in '61. One of those was against Portugal when they both scored.

I think and could well be wrong but Duff, Paterson and Jones or was it Lafferty (1st) for Northern Ireland?Spijed wrote:Also, if Brady, Hendrick & Ward play, when was the last time we had three players on the same side at once for an international?

Did Sammy Todd play at the same time as Elder and Irvine, making it three for N.Ireland ?Royboyclaret wrote:Did we ever?

I think you've cracked it ClaretCliff.
Elder and Irvine both started the game against Mexico in '66 and Sammy Todd came on as substitute.
And then all three started the game against England in '66.

Checked on wiki and Todd played 11 times for NI. He must be one of our most capped players yet is never mentioned much, a bit of a forgotten man.

All we know so far is that Brady will play , very little news here in Ireland who else will turn out tonight but at least a couple will win their first caps . Will all 3 Clarets be on the pitch at the same time not sure really .

Who else can play at left back, aside from Ward? Surely Brady will be in a more attacking role if he is the captain?Tribesmen wrote:All we know so far is that Brady will play , very little news here in Ireland who else will turn out tonight but at least a couple will win their first caps . And is there anyone who could replace Hendrick?

Alex Elder, Willie Irvine and Sammy Todd all played in the same Northern Ireland side and more recently all of Michael Duff, Steve Jones and Kyle Lafferty played for Northern Ireland when Burnley players on four different occasions. The first occasion was in August 2006 when the game started with no Burnley players on the pitch and ended with three as they all came on as subs.Spijed wrote:Also, if Brady, Hendrick & Ward play, when was the last time we had three players on the same side at once for an international?
