How many foreign players have been a success at Burnley?

Post by cricketfieldclarets » Thu Mar 30, 2017 5:01 pm

By foreign I mean anyone from outside Britain AND Ireland.

Defour is obviously a very skilfull and talented player - as good as we have right now. But is rarely fit and 7 plus million for someone who has never lasted 90 minutes in the league is some fee. Hope he plays a part in the run in but fear he will forever be an enigma. Same for JBG.

Remember getting Papadopoulos in and wqs massively excited by him. Did ok at times but didnt settle. Left and became a european champion and very good domestically for a much bigger club un Panathanaikos.

Michopoulos did OK Relatively speaking. Djemba Djemba too in his short spell.

Then we have Guerrero, Van Der Schaff (anyone know what happened yet?), Dane Richards, David Edgar, Drissa Diallo, Danny Karbassyioon, Rouwen Hennings, Jelle Vossen (almost as strange as VDS), Besart Berisha, Cameron Howieson Frederic Nimani.

Gnohere and Bikey who I am sure were the same person!

I am struggling to think of one who has truly succeeded. I hope Defour will but I am not optimistic.

What is the issue? Is it the club, the town, the management, language barrier or are we not scouting properly? We must have the worse record of any club in the country for signing and developing foreign players. Its not limited to one manager either. It goe back to Stans days who probably did have a more old school approach.

One area I would love us to strengthen is overseas recruitment but i am not sure why it hasnt worked yet.

Ashley Barnes, Scott Arfield ... ;)

Drissa Diallo and Ian Cox were pretty good for short periods.

We seem to struggle in the main with players we've signed from abroad but those foreign players with experience of British football do "ok" for us

Jensen - WBA
Kalvenes - Dundee Utd
Camara - Wolves

Maybe it is a settling in thing that

Yeah exactly. They were more tried tested and acclimatised.

I suppose Jensen was a success and the other two did fine for what we needed at that time.

Fine if they've played in Britain previously but these video signings, well we well and truly get done.

Buying Berisha for scoring against the England B team is still funny to me.

The same can be applied to numerous clubs signing foreign players.
We all know you don't want us to sign foreigners, you've made that clear.

A fit Defour would be the fulcrum of our team, a partially fit Defour still has more technical ability then anyone else.

Once we're safe its probably not a bad idea to send him off to a specialist for his foot which is rumoured to be causing him problems, give time to get operated on and recover for next season.

The foreign market is still worth trying out and we will get better with our scouting over time and with investment.

Hope you are correct Sid but just don't see him being here next season.Wife's comments on Twitter and family living in Belgium/lack of playing time when not injured and bigger money to be had elsewhere

Send him on his way then if that's the case.

Right now he's injury prone and not really an attractive proposition to many clubs.
He could however sort himself out over the summer and have a cracking season with us next season to put himself back in the window.

Jean Louis-V.....
Luigi Cineamo (sp) did the Greeks come as a 3?
Gabor Kiraly
David Johnson. was he Jamaican? ( was great though )
Fredrick Nimini

I don't think many have done too well, a few average at best but a lot of flops.

Who was the 'keeper who played in the Cup game against Darlington - was it Kval?
Rune Vindheim
Gentile - the CB signed by Waddle
Diego Penny

one the flip-side - Ian Cox - who I think was Bermudan - can't think of many others who haven't already been mentioned

I think that Kalvenes did more than just fine for us, especially towards the end of the promotion campaign.

David Edgar would have been a success if only we'd played him in his rightful position of central midfield.

Likewise Rhys Williams. Does he count as he was only on loan?

Did David Edgar really have a rightful position - certainly poor at full back, centre half and midfield.

Edgar was ok. Kalvenes was reasonable for what we needed. Steady away.

Williams was ok too but he was already over here and a loanee.

Have we ever made profit on a foreigner?

Jimmy Mac counts because the original post says from outside England and Ireland. Jimmy is from the north.

How much money have we paid for overseas players in total, how much game time have we had from them, and how many can be counted as successful?
We really don't have a clue when signing overseas players, mystic meg would do better.
Until it's not just a question of throwing away money, keep well clear.

I've nothing against overseas players there are some absolute gems, it's just we have a job identifying them in our own leagues let alone abroad.

We don't have a clue about british players either, the risks are there for any player when they're signed up.

You say you've nothing against overseas players, but you're usually the first one to tell us all we shouldn't sign foreign players.

Exactly, I love foreign players and their higher levels of skills but we have not got a scouting network set up to assess them, nor the framework to incorporate them.
SD fundamentally is a British manger with rather rigid requirements expectations and approach so at present a good double reason to keep out of that particular market.

That's why we need to keep trying, improve the network etc.

Same applies to the british network.

Dyche can't change his style without better players and if those players can be found abroad......

You moan he doesn't experiment, but when he does you moan then too.
He needs to sign better quality players and you're moaning about where he may sign them from.

Let us know what YOU want Dyche to do next season, I can then screenshot it and wave it at you when you've changed your face to suit.

To be fair we've been shopping in Europe's bargain basement, taking a punt on finding a good 'un.

The only time we've spent big bucks, like we spend on those decent British chaps, if when we got Defour. And before his recent injuries, was being lauded by plenty as the classiest player they've seen in the last 30 years to play for us.

Just on Kalvanes, he had amazing positional sense, the slowest full back we've had but rarely got caught out. Did a good job for us.
