Great article on Sir Stanley Matthews

Post by cricketfieldclarets » Fri Mar 31, 2017 10:46 am

Initially its a comparison between him and Defoe but goes on to talk more about Matthews.

Anyone on here see Matthews live?

We had relatives in Blackpool in the 50's and 60's so we spent a lot of time there. Dad and I used to go to Blackpool matches when we could. So, we saw Mathews, Mortensen, Mudie, Ernie Taylor, George Farm, Harry Johnstone, Bill Perry etc. in the 50's and Matthews in his later days before he went to Stoke, early in the 60's. Jimmy Armfield was playing for them then too.
My favourite game that I remember was Blackpool v Sunderland who had the great Len Shackleton playing and it was billed as a showdown between the two stars. Only Mathews was a star that day and I think the score was 6-1. Shackleton hardly got a kick of the ball but Sir Stanley created most of the goals and even got the last himself from a header, which was virtually unknown. It was a nod in from about a yard out but I still remember the reaction from the fans and the players.

Impressive. I cant imagine everyone singing happy birthday to any player now!

I wondered why he could play at the top level until so late and current players aren't able to but I guess its because all of the other players are equally as fit.

Talking Pictures channel, freeview on Sky343, have some 15 minute fillers, titled Glimpses.
One of these is totally Stanley Matthews and it crops up quite regularly.

Went to see him a number of times but he didn't always turn out. I can still recall the audible groan when it was announced before kickoff that 'No' 7 today for Blackpool is Mandy Hill.

Mc left Stoke midway thro' the 65-66 season (his last appearance for them v. us) and joined Oldham Athletic.
